Neighborhood: Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.

Really nice place, relaxing and clean. We went in when it was empty so we were served straight away. I think they only have two therapists. One was out of break so we had our treatments one after the other which we didn’t mind. We had our own treatment rooms and were allowed to rest in there whilst the other person were having their foot and lower leg massage. Even though it was a foot massage, I got to have the treatment lying down on my back, which was really good! The therapist checked if the pressure was okay and I would express it clearly if I wanted it with less pressure. I said softer please and he understood. He was skilled and I would go again. Lovely place to go after walking around all day. The man was so grateful for our business and he even did a full bow to us and showed us out to say goodbye. Really polite and good service. Very good price too. 20 mins for 1500 Yen plus tax pp (special offer for first time customers).

I was walking on Shijo Dori Avenue in the evening, enjoying the sights. I noticed a young man dressed in white therapy clothing. He was standing next to a billboard advertising massage therapy. My body ached and my blood circulation needed attention, too.
I chose a compression massage, no oils on my body and I will not be undressed.
He handed me soft lounging pants and a long sleeve shirt to wear for the massage.
The young man has strong skillful hands, he pressed and squeezed me back to feeling well.

I went for a 20min. Foot shiatsu massage and all he did was to press the SAME spot, just like a very basic machine, for 20 minutes.
Thumbs down.
