The area
Address
Neighborhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

Nitten exhibition
Jan 2020 • Solo
This museum, located in Okazaki Park, is now called Kyocera Museum by adding the name of its sponsor. I went for Nitten exhibition. The exhibition was not in this built, but in a nearby annex, which is in my opinion not very stylish.

Re-open in March 2020
Nov 2019
The main hall of Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art was expected for re-opening by mid-March 2020 after large scale renovation works. Be ready to visit this museum in coming spring.

Good exhibitions but choose your time.
Jan 2019
This museum has been a favourite for a long time and has hosted some wonderful exhibitions, its exhibitions include both Western and Eastern art, and other material also. However sometimes there are periods when the selection of material is not as varied or as interesting as one would like. So check when major exhibitions are on before you decide to visit. Other than that the place is always well organised and a pleasure to visit.

Quirky Museum with Often Great Exhibis
Oct 2016 • Couples
We have been to this somewhat run-down museum several times. You never know what might be there. The museum often has special exhibits, for which one must pay an entry fee. But for other exhibits, which appear to be more local or community based, there is no fee. We've seen robots, kimonos, and works of great Japanese art. Always worth checking if you're visiting Kyoto.

Still a great art museum
Oct 2016 • Friends
We recently made a visit to the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art for the Ito Jakuchu exhibit. I used to frequent this museum often during my childhood growing up in Kyoto. However this was my first time in over 30 years. This museum, which opened in 1928, is one of the oldest art museums in Japan. The facade of the building is an interesting mix of western and Japanese. We only viewed the Jakuchu exhibit due to time constraints. Highly recommended.

The few exhibits were good but more expected of venue.

We had time to kill and I wanted to see the Mary Cassatt exhibit, so we took the bus from the JR train station. This was an easy and economical way to go. The main exhibit was extensive as was another exhibit of an early20 th century Japanese artist, whose work was very good. After seeing these 2 exhibits there was nothing else to really see here, which was disappointing. It cost 1500 yen or about $15 per person- pretty steep for the experience.

1200 yen for some scrolls?
Oct 2016 • Friends
We planned to go to the Modern Art Museum across the street but due to a national holiday it was closed. We paid 1200 yen each (three of us) to walk the perimeter of the first floor gallery that had only Japanese scrolls. Nice scrolls but certainly not worth the price. Then, we tried to go to another section and were told it was only for members. 2nd and 3rd floor I asked? Answer: Another exhibition so a different ticket was necessary. We spent no more than 15 minutes in the museum--really, really expensive.

Very interesting!
Oct 2015 • Couples
My husband was reluctant to go in at first, but he quickly changed his mind. There were several exhibitions taking place, but we only visited the free/permanent display, which was an eye opener. It presents a very diverse selection of modern Japanese artists, and not at all the traditional scrolls which we expected to see. I am very pleased to have convinced my husband to go in and would go there again.
