Top ways to experience Old Mitsui Family Shimogamo Villa and nearby attractions

The area

Address
Neighborhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

As I went to Shimogamo Shrine for Hatsumode, I dropped in this place. (Before it was used as a residence of the chief judge of Kyoto Family Court, and not open to public.) The build is well maintained, though it is not pompous, we can notice a good taste of Mitsui family.

I didn't know that modern Japanese architecture still remained in Shimogamo. I visited to see the building and garden. It is a three-story building, but from the side it looks like a four-story building, and it is in very good condition. The view of the building from the garden was also beautiful. I had tea and Japanese sweets in a chair on the first floor, and drinking tea while looking at the garden was also special. The second floor is reserved for private use, and the third floor is usually closed to the public. I was able to enjoy the atmosphere even when I visited during the cold season.

I joined yoga tour at the Old mitsui shimogamo villa.
It was a snowy day. (Special day!!)
I really enjoyed it with a wonderful staff.
Before the yoga, I enjoyed to explore the shimogamo jinja shrine.

If I can join it, definitely I will do it!!!

I practiced Yoga here on a snowy morning. Practicing inside the warm house while enjoying the winter scenery. It was a wonderful relaxing experience. The villa is in a peaceful area away from the crowded touristic areas. The villa and the garden were very beautiful.

I joined the event of doing Yoga at Mitsui Shimogamo villa. This experience was excellent!! At first we visit shrine of beauty and walk about spiritual forest. Then did small meditation with teacher. After that we move to traditional Japanese house and did Yoga around one hour at the room normally don’t opened to public. Teacher is very professional and friendly. My mind became very clear! Hope this event takes place every day!

The historic Mitsui home recently opened to the public, and is worth a visit. Visitors can wander through most of the house, and it provides a very thorough snapshot of what life was like for a wealthy Japanese family in the early part of the last century. The house was built as a summer residence, and a large covered open-walled room provides a place to rest and look out over the beautiful garden. Tea service (for a fee) is provided in that area as well. It's a pleasant, restful spot away from the more crowded tourist attractions.

Old Mitsu Family Shimogamo Villa has opened to the public for the first time at Oct. 2016. It is located about 5 minutes walk from Demachiyanagi Station of Keihan Railway. We can find it easily because it is close to the big red Torii Gate of Shimogamo Jinja Shrine.
The Villa was built as a Mitsui Family’s rest house(one of a family-run business conglomerate then) in 1925. It was transferred to the national government after World War 2 and used for an official residence of the Kyoto Family Court until 2007. Kyoto City government takes on renovating and managing the Villa now.
The Villa consists of a Shoin-zukuri style main building with three-story, a tea ceremony house and a landscape garden, etc. After hearing a short explanation by the staff at the entrance room, we can look round both the 1st floor and the garden freely (fee 400yen). We can’t enter the 2nd and 3rd floors except a special opening period (from Nov. 19 to Oct. 4 this year, fee 800 yen). As the number of visitors on the 3rd floor is highly limited at one time, we might take a long time to reach there.
We had a fantastic experience to see the garden covered with moss from the drawing room!

The experience was awesome beginning with the tour guide and interesting info of Shimogamo shrine. Practising with Yoga breathing on the way to the Mitsui Family Shimogamo villa to begin the Yoga lesson with the teacher. It's so lovely to practise Yoga, stretch your body in such a beautiful and serene sight! It worths for if you're finding a place to settle down your mind and grab some "peace"!

I experienced yoga for the first time at an amazing venue which is Japanese cultural property! Yoga on tatami is more relaxing than I expected and you'd never experienced. Plus the garden is tranquil so I love it.
