Memoirs of Kyoto

Kyoto—a city of quaint streets and picturesque avenues lined with wooden houses from a time gone by. The denizens of the city still embody this old-fashioned existence. Their passion for their own heritage is embodied in their fashion and mannerisms. The city’s temples are not mere mausoleums to something long gone, but are living, breathing monuments to the spirit of the city that is Kyoto.

We will learn how to photograph humanity and life in the famed old streets of Kyoto. You will learn the most effective camera settings and techniques for capturing moments on the fly. We will also practice approaching people and asking them to pose for our cameras, in particular those wearing beautiful kimono, bright splashes of color and elegant patterns.

Kyoto Zen Temples

What’s the Story?

Enter a sanctuary of Zen in the confines of the Nanzenji temple complex. The weight of the world will melt away as we explore verdant gardens and elegant Zen architecture. Together we will escape into this wonderland and find harmony in our selves as well as in our viewfinders. You will also get in touch with the subtleties of each of the four seasons, depending on when you choose to visit—contemplate nature through the lens of your camera and the school of Zen.

What We’ll Shoot

Learn how to work with various lighting conditions in the confines of Kyoto’s serene Zen gardens and temples. We will explore creative and effective composition concepts for capturing the beauty of each location. Taking it a step further, we will also instruct you on being in tune with the peculiarities and characteristics of each season and all kinds of weather conditions, whether that be rain or sunshine. In a true Zen sense, we will teach you to accept and adapt to all shooting conditions.

Where We’ll Explore

We avoid the famous locations cluttered with selfie sticks and throngs of tourists, and instead we take you to some of the lesser-known sub-temples around Nanzenji. There, unhindered by the crowds, we can appreciate the aesthetics of rock gardens and Buddhist temples. You’ll be struck by the sense of intimacy of a real Zen experience.

I was in Kyoto for 3 days and one of the afternoon was dedicated to a photoshoot with a Maiko (an apprentice training to be a Geisha). I had a good session as the Maiko was accommodating and just before the actual session Lukasz showed me some possible photo ideas. This was especially good because my time with the Maiko was limited. After looking at the photos I’ve taken, I wished the lighting was better. There are some unflattering shadows on her face despite her being only 18 years old. Overall the session was good.

Review of: Memoirs of Kyoto
Thank you to Paul for his invaluable tips on this afternoon tour walking around Gion. Paul worked hard to challenge me to see things through news eyes and a different perspective. He gave me tips from both an aesthetic and technical perspective and enhanced my understanding of the capabilities of the camera. At the same time I learnt about his experience of living in Kyoto and history of the city. He encouraged and challenged me to approach strangers to see if I could take their photo - which definitely was a helpful strategy to improve my photos. I would really recommend this tour. Thank you also to Lukasz who helped with behind the scenes logistics.

Review of: Inari After Dusk
I signed up for this for the two advanced, knowledgeable photographers in our family (that's not me!) I suggested that Paul focus on the "guys" (husband and adult son) because they really care about the details. I think Paul could teach me night photography because he was good at explaining things so I could understand them. However, I realized that either the people who cared about learning, or I, the beginner, could learn, and I asked Paul to focus on them. I was so happy to enjoy the evening. I think Paul would be able to teach to a diverse group, but I really wanted the guys, one of whom does a lot with night photography, to be able to learn. The crisp January night (I recommend Uniqlo long underwear) was beautiful. It was quiet and we were in the hills at this amazing shrine with only an occasional person around. It was magical. I would not go alone up there at night because it would be easy to get lost - there are more trails than what we did with Paul, and it might be hard to find one's way back. I would recommend Paul to either beginners or advanced photographers. I liked him as a person, not just a teacher. And, because he is American, I felt very comfortable asking him questions about Japan that I might have been nervous about asking Japanese people. If Paul did other tours, I would have wanted to see if he was available as a tour guide.

I learned so much and got some really great shots. Paul is also a great source of information on places to go while you are in Kyoto and the area. So if you book one of his tours, he can give you some great advice on where to go to get great shots--and avoid crowds.
