The area
Address
Neighborhood: Southern Kyoto
Southern Kyoto has a reserved air. Though the Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's major tourist attractions, the surrounding nature, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines provide less-visited spaces for strolling and reflection. The Fushimi Inari Shrine itself is made up of 32,000 sub-shrines, and the mountain they are dotted across beckons hikers, picnickers, and lovers of the outdoors. Many of the mountain's off-set paths aren't frequented by tourists, and the mountain's serenity can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Southern Kyoto is the place to enjoy being outside, and to pay your respects to the ancient architecture and gods of the land that are celebrated here.

Shin-san's class is good fun! Plenty of good food to go around after sushi making. There's even a graduation ceremony for best students

What a mistake this is! Unless you like a sushi Mardi Gras, this has nothing to do with making sushi.

We really have a fun time with Shin San and Midori san. We learn to make our own gourmet meal and GST a certificate of participation at the end of the class.

This class is heavy on entertainment and very light on learning. It could be an enjoyable afternoon (picture taking, costumes, festive atmosphere) but you will not learn much about sushi. The content of the class is communicated by a few flash cards. There is nothing about the history of sushi, role in Japanese culture, training for sushi masters, ways to cut fish, how to do it at home or anything else you might need to learn. Everything is pre-made and presented without context. Fish quality was not high either.
Instructors were nice, but had very limited English (totally fine, but it was communicated it would be a class in English) so it wasn’t really possible to ask questions. Activity was just unlike any other cooking class I have taken in Japan. (I have done several.) Other classes gave recipes, advice on how to find ingredients and many other tips that allow for home repetition. This class doesn’t give me any way to make it again in the future on my own. Disappointing experience for those wanting to learn to make sushi rather than just pass an afternoon.

It was a fun learning experience and something new to us. It’s not your usual sightseeing tour, but somehow you get to learn art and culture in the process . It was an enjoyable activity Thanks to the funny teacher.
