Pleasant Water Feature
Oct 2019
When visiting Hiroshima's Peace Park, we sometimes found ourselves by the Motoyasu River. This clean, tranquil water meshes nicely now with the theme of peace and runs by the east side of the main park, where most monuments are located. During the aftermath of the Aug. 9, 1945, atomic bomb blast, however, the picture was much different. The bomb exploded almost above the nearby Aioi Bridge, which crosses the river. Corpses filled the water, and many survivors jumped in to seek relief from the intense heat.

We chose to cross the river from the park via the Motoyasu-bashi Bridge to follow a wide walking path to the Atomic Bomb Dome. I noted a river cruise boat and a water taxi in action below. It was quite pleasant strolling along the Motoyasu, and we sat on a bench briefly, simply to enjoy the ambiance.

Though I consider the river to be an important contributor to the immediate environment, I would not classify it as a true attraction, compared to the many park monuments and the Peace Memorial Museum.

The river of the bombing day
Dec 2019
No one would be interested in this river in front of the A-Bomb Dome on the day when Little Boy: the atomic bomb was dropped and the enormous fire & heat flame spread throughout the city. Someone probably ran to the water and drowned. The river was full of floating dead bodies, not beautiful as today. While I sat & chilled in the historical area, I was still thinking of the time on the watch shown in the Peace Memorial Museum that had stopped when the bomb had exploded that day.

A lovely afternoon or morning wander
Jul 2019
When we were here it was raining, still worth the wander around the walls, as the walk picks up a range of national monuments. On a sunny day it would be lovely.

Motoyasu River
Oct 2019
This river runs alongside the dome and back to the pond and museum. You can cross the bridge and go into the peace park. It is a massive memorial and nothing was spared.

Peaceful
Oct 2019
The calmness of the river lies in juxtaposition to the devastation seen on one side and the Peace Memorial park on the other. A great place to take a moment and reflect upon the significance of the event.

Worth a Vist to the Area
Dec 2019
It is a big area to just simply walk and try to understand the suffering from the atomic bomb. Take your time in this area to understand it all.

Calming river
Nov 2019
The nice river stands in contradistinction to the spot where all the horrors happened. It flows as a contradiction to the tragedy and calms the atmosphere.

Serene river
Aug 2018 • Family
This serene river cuts across the Peace Memorial Park and accentuates the scenery of the park and it’s theme of peace. Take your time to stroll along its banks where there are various monuments and artifacts reminding us of what happened back in 1945. Lots of photo opportunities.

Really Adds To The City Centre's Beauty
Jun 2019 • Solo
In the centre of Hiroshima the Motoyasu River has lovely paths along its banks so you can enjoy the views.
Cruises are available but the waters make for a lovely scenic and serene backdrop to the Peace Park and you can enjoy it just as well from these paths.
There are a few bridges in the centre for you to cross and get a better view of the waters The Aioi Bridge near the Atmoic Bomb Dome is T shaped over the water and was used by the Enola Gay as the target to drop the H Bomb.

Nice to walk along or sit and reflect
Jun 2019 • Couples
Over quite a few years have walked along and sat beside this river and always feel the peacefulness of it .
Then I hope that the hundreds of people who rushed to these waters for relief after the Atomic Bomb but then perished because of the radiation are at peace, maybe their souls are helping to keep it peaceful .
A lovely bridge goes across the river and the terrific Peace Park borders one side of it.
You can catch a boat here to do a cruise around or go to Miyajima which is a beautifull Island nearby.
There is a cafe beside the river for drinks or a meal and great ice cream .
Plenty of seating and some poignant memorials for the victims of the Atomic Bombing are close by .
Take time to visit when in Hiroshima it is a special place embedded in history forever.
