    A Hiroshima must!!
An absolute must if staying in Hiroshima, although not aesthetically pleasing they are absolutely delicious and so filling it was so good I went twice. I chose one with a pork filling and another with a shrimp filling. The building has three floors of small stalls they all serve variations of the same dish. I chose mine purely on availability of seating. They serve it on the hot plate and give you a small tool to slice the Okonomi and put it on a small plate where it’s eaten with chop sticks It’s fascinating to watch them make it front if you. It’s a great place to chat to other travellers if travelling solo.

Great okonomi - a must try in Hiroshima
Three floors of Okonomi all serving roughly the same dishes. Wouldn't worry too much which one you go to just seek out a friendly face and an English menu (if you need it), sit back and enjoy the food. It's great watching them prepare it and the Hoi Sin type sauce which goes on top is lovely.

    Must go
An absolute must if you are Hiroshima, although not the easiest to find. It is in a subtle building that you have to go up stairs for. All of the okonimyaki places seem basically the same so go wherever you like. I particularly recommend that you get your okonomiyaki with mochi, but also there are plenty of options from vegetarian to seafood. Starve yourself before coming because okonimyaki are very filling.

For those that aren’t aware, an ‘okonomiyaki’ is a Japanese savory pancake dish cooked on a teppan that is very common in Hiroshima. Typical ingredients include cabbage, meat, and seafood, noodles and a special sauce. And it is absolutely delicious!

Okonomimura is a multi-storey building in Shintenchi that houses multiple teppan restaurants serving okonomiyaki - sort of like a street food stall but indoors. We visited this for dinner whilst visiting Hiroshima and absolutely loved it. Definitely worth a visit.

If you're going to Hiroshima, this place is a must. To a Californian, okonomiyaki loosely translates to "the comfort food better than carne asada fries." 4 floors of nothing but some of the best Okonomiyaki stations. Each floor has between 3 to 4 different stations. Hot, fresh, and most of all delicious. It's worth at least three visits while staying in Hiroshima.

Also...KEEP A FAN ON YOU! It can get toasty next to the fryers!

A group of 4 of us went straight from the train station and selected " Syo-Chan at the 3 floor of Okonomimura. It is at the corner, on the left side as you exit from the lift.
We wanted to order only 2 pancakes to be shared among 4 of us since we noticed that the portion is huge.
We were told we can't share. We complied by ordering one pancake for each of us.
While waiting for our food, we noticed another group of 4 locals had their pancakes delivered but they were sharing!
We confronted the owner why there is such discrepancy but was not given a good reason nor an apology.
Anyway we left with 4 plates half eaten. The food was a disappointment, beside the discrimination faced.

The Osaka-style Okonomiyaki is familiar to many, but the Hiroshima-style was something I never tasted before. Therefore I was very keen to find Okonomimura, which had gotten good reviews. It is a multiple floor place, with several Okonomiyaki stalls. The atmosphere is great. Me and my son were very pleased with the food and friendly staff. I really recommed that you try this out.

We only had 3 nights in Hiroshima and what a lovely city. Certainly brings it home to you while staying here. We ate in this restaurant and the food was very good and the prices also good. With a warm and freindly welcome from the staff we managed to overcome the language barrier and try the local omniyaki (I may have spelt that incorrectly) and we were very impressed with everything. I would definately recommend it as the staff were very good and we had a great evening. Lovely place and lovely people. We will return again sometime.

The place is as many Japanese restaurants a bit tricky to find the first time, basically look for the entrance to the elevator and pick one of the three floors that all have about 8 or so okonomiaki places to choose from. We ended up at Ron’s on third floor (right from elevator all the way down). Great friendly service, delicious Hiroshima style okonomiaki. Ended up downing several sake shots with the local regulars.

(See picture) 4th floor, turn left and go to this guy- I am vegetarian and had read a lot about avoiding dashi and lard and various dried sardines etc.... the chef there was brilliant, he checked every ingredient with me before he added it, used a separate space and utensils and of course it's all cooked right in front of you. The food was DELICIOUS and for once I was 100% happy it was actually veggie! I was exttemely impressed!

Essentially a building with floors or Okonomiyaki sellers who cook the meal right in front of you. The dish is basically a pancake piled high with pork, egg, noodles and topped with sauce.

When you walk in you'll see many different sellers. Just pull up a seat at one and go for it, if you walk around not sure which one to go to you'll never make your mind up.

The dish I has had was substantial and you wont go hungry. The value for a filling meal was certainly worth a visit. If this is your visit to Hiroshima then I recommend you go check it out, its basically the home town meal of the city so you should try it at least once Hiroshima style (other cities have their own version and you can debate which is best but this is the meal Hiroshima hangs it hat on).
