The alley was about 5 mins on foot from Susukino station. It was sad to see many restaurants closed, possibly because of the COVID-19 impact. The place, and particularly the shop that we walked in, however, was a great place to discover and taste Sapporo-styled ramen at reasonable price.

I visited in early April 2023 on a Sunday night. To my surprise, only around 40% of the place were opened. It was a disappointment looking at the empty place. Not sure it’s because of Sunday night or not. We thought there was a new ramen street but couldn’t find it so we went back to one of the places still open. The owner was friendly, ramen was average. If the place is not that empty, I think it would be a much better experience.

Ramen are Japanese noodles, usually thin but not too thin and not as thick as udon. The noodles are served in a soup. The recipe for the soup is a secret known only to the chef. Ramen are not too expensive. There are about a dozen ramen shops in the street, have a look around and decide which looks is best

Most of the shops are closed so we went into this particular shop as it was empty. There were 6 of us so we occupied all the seats. As the chef start serving the ramen, I stood up to take a photo of the shop and the ramen. The chef immediately told me to stop and shouted “NO!”, I said sorry and sat down. To my surprise, he started to throw his temper and banged his pan and wok very loudly behind the counter, THROUGHOUT our dining in the shop. It is very awkward and uncomfortable so we decided to leave without finishing our meal. Such a shame and disappointment. I have been traveling to different parts of Japan every year, this has to be the worst experience I ever had, in Sapporo sadly.

We went there mainly because of the craze all over social media. We walked all the way to the end of the alley and we decided to walk back to the first stall and try. The first stall was a Chinese style sapporo ramen 🍜. It was manned by a Japanese man who in my opinion was quite unhappy when we enter. It was around 8pm when we stepped in. I give him the benefit of doubt that maybe he’s just tired. Throughout the whole experience, he was rather rude to not only us but the rest of the patrons as well. Anywho, he was kind of ‘in a rush’ to pack up and he turned down the next gentleman who walked into the store, citing they were close for the day. The very next instance, 2 young ladies walked in and he allowed them to be serve. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Come on! This is is unprofessional. With this kind of service attitude, I am astounded and disappointed. Not going visit again. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

We were in Sapporo for a few days, leaving on the 2nd. i didn’t do the research well and we were shock that New Year was such an important family day that almost everything is closed. People go to shrine, spend time with family, no big celebration, big new year dinner with count down etc. None of the departmental stores food hall or restaurants floors was opened. We were so glad that some ramen stores at this ramen alley were opened on new year day! The ramen were delicious, cheap and good portion!

A short alley near Susukino Station packed with 13 Japanese noodle shops offering different kinds of noodle dish. Differences are 1) ingredients making soup 2) topping 3) types of noodle 4) services. This place is not recommended for large group trying to eat together in one shop due to space limit. What a large group can do is to split up into pairs and enter the shops. Most shops are usually jam-packed with cooking space at the back and bar-like counter with chairs, altogether approx 15 square meters in size; thus, they all encourage a quick turnover of customers. The limited shop space does not encourage customers to eat while chit-chatting at their leisure especially when the shop owners' hospitality is not shown so welcomingly. (Of course, private food bloggers might not be able to film VDO in such places. Some shops might even not be happy to be photographed inside the shop. This is common in Japan, which we should be aware and observe strictly too.). Those with food restrictions is recommended to do research well enough about each shop's specialty and menu(s) beforehand; otherwise, you might find it very difficult and time-consuming to choose which shop to enter by looking only at the sign or menu list in front of the shop (English menu available). Of course, all shops do offer their own unique and OISHII (good taste) flavors. So, this is definitely the heaven for ramen lovers to have a chance to taste original Sapporo ramens all day long without changing the venue. More of less like Ramen Museum in Yokohama.

Horyu's exact address is Minami 6 jo Nishi 3, Chuo-ku, Sapporo-city. It's a quaint small restaurant that only offers 3 delectable ramen items. Although the menu for halal is not as extensive the non-halal menu, the flavor for all the 3 different ramen dish - AWESOME! If you are a foodie - this is a must-go. And you'd be surprised on the extent how they prepare their halal bowl of ramen. Everything is marked in green from the pots, to the ladles, to the chopstick and the bowls to indicate that the preparation for the halal ramen is totally separate from the non-halal ramen.

According to legend, this is the birthplace of “Miso Ramen”, distinctive to Sapporo. Eight shops started in 1951 and has been operated by the original families until now. One comes to taste the history and the atmosphere of the noodle culture. Each shop offers ramen but with different broth and accompanying menu – spicy Szechuan, Korean, seafood and traditional miso etc. We walked around and chose a traditional shop and sat around the kitchen bench. The small shop walls are ornate with signed autographs of Japanese celebrities, including a sumo wrestler!
Surprisingly, looking over the counter, one can see that the noodles and broth was mixed and cooked from readymade packets. Still taste delicious. Beware that the restaurants allow smoking and it could be quite annoying being in the small room with steam and smoke. Eat & get out quickly!

If you have never had the "real" stuff, this may be a great place to start. If you know your ramen, this is a pass. This Ramen Alley was packed with foreigners visiting Sapporo. We did not see any locals eating there. The ramen was very blah and of course AFTER trying it, the locals told us not to go there. They guided us to a better ramen shop...ask the locals if you speak Japanese. They are friendly and will tell you all the great places to eat! Hotel staff are helpful as well but they usually do not want to deter business from locals and sometimes are hesitant to be honest. If you ask, ask without naming any business that you had in mind. This goes with any location in Japan. Just ask, "Where is a good place for Ramen?"
