The ropeway is a bit expensive for the length of the ride, but in winter it is really the only way to go up the mountain. We were crammed in, and were fortunately near the outside so we could see outside. I don't think the people in the middle could see anything. You first go in one large car, then into two smaller ones that are joined. The last ones in the first car become the first ones into the next. In scheduling time, you want to give plenty of time for spending at the top.

The options for ascending the mountain are somewhat misleading. The peak is reached in Cable Car Lifts, with the option to travel to Midway only (the start of the second lift). As one of us is not a fan of Cable Cars, we opted for a return trip for the Midway journey. Leaving the Pavilion, our expectation of a view of the city, were immediately squashed The area is surrounded by trees. We continued our wandering on the right side of the pavilion and noticed stairs that paralleled the Cable Car ascent and a couple walking in that direction. We followed and are SO glad that we did. The stairs ascend directly to Peak - not for the faint hearted, but there is an alternative marked and paved pathway that meanders to the peak through the most serene forest. The descent to Midway to rejoin the Cable Car, was equally enjoyable. It is disappointing that the Venue does not make travelers aware of the potential to access the walking trail at the Midway Level. There is not information (in English) at Midway Pavilion that directs travelers to the Walking Trail. We encourage the option.

A good place to see the overview of Sapporo. We visited on Christmas Day - 25 Dec - and went up as the first group when it opened at 11 am (opening time in the winter). Clear sky with good visibility of 20+km. Can clearly see the Sea of Japan over Otaru as well as 360 degree view around Sapporo.
The best access is to take the Sapporo Street Car (200 yen flat fair) and get out at "Ropeway Iriguchi" stop. Look westward, you can see the "Moiwa Ropeway free shuttle bus stop" about 30 meter away. The bus frequency is every 15 minutes. You may choose to walk about 500 meter up the slope to the Ropeway get in point, if the 20 seat-bus is too crowded.
The air on top observation desk is cool & fresh - especially during the winter - be prepared for the wind chill factor. The Jewels restaurant - located 1 floor below the roof top of the observation - offers a nice diner with one of the best view in Japan. Worth it.

Great ride and it is worth the money. Remember to grab coupon in the streetcar which allows 200Y off. There is a shuttle bus once you get off Street Car and cross the road and walk few steps, you would see the bus stop with orang sign (or yellow, I forgot)

An ok ropeway as far as ropeways go. Nice view of Sapporo and all, and a yummy restaurant (Jewel) at the top that serves good food with the view. The other ropeways we visited in Hokkaido were more unique and interesting though.

I followed the directions from www.japan-guide.com to get here and it was very helpful. From Susukino, there's a streetcar that loops to the Ropeway Iriguchi station (fare is JPY170/way), and just 50 meters from the station, there's a free shuttle bus to take you to the entrance of the Ropeway. The round trip ropeway and mini cable car fare is JPY1700 per adult. When we got to the visitor center, the lady informed us it was cloudy and almost no visibility. It was literally freezing cold but we still took the chance, hoping that it would somehow clear when we get there.

It was small hope but it was enough because we were still able to take pictures and at least we saw something. It began to really clear when we were on our way back. Unfortunately my camera wasn't powerful enough to capture the scenery because it's not good for low light. I do have a friend whose camera I borrowed so I could take some memorable shots. I'll upload it another time.

We'll come back in the daytime the next time we visit.

We booked a double entry pass of Sapporo TV tower (see separate review) and Mt Moiwa Ropeway before travelling to Japan with Expedia and it was well worth the money.

Although Mt Moiwa isn't the easiest to get to, we tried train and bus which was fun as we went late on a Saturday night after the Aus v Fiji Rugby World Cup match in niSapporo. However, don't be scared of local public transport in Japan its great.

We had the mid station and top station pass so you get to ride 1/2 way up then swap to a different car to the top.

The queues weren't too bad and the view
is well worth it, however be aware you are high so it's windy and can be cold at the
bell

We would definitely recommend Mt Moiwa as something to do in Sapporo as the views will be wonderful whatever time of day you go up.

Great views from the top. Excellent lunch as the cloud cleared. Ropeway most of the distance and then railway to the top.

A very beautiful place. Affordable admission fee. A spectacular view once you've reached the top. Make some time to visit this place if you're in sapporo. Very friendly staff, they assisted us when we needed help with getting back to the train stations. Even provided a shuttle service.

It was still wintertime in Sapporo so it was really cold up in Mt Moiwa when we visited. The famous Bell of Happiness, I must honestly say, is overrated. The view from the top, however, is phenomenal. There aren't a variety of food shops up there, just one resto and a cafe so basically, just two options, although in the evening (past 7, I believe), the resto closes so it's just the coffee shop for you. Better take your dinner before you decide to go up. Getting there wasn't very hard. A shuttle was provided for guests. And of course, Japan is known for its punctuality, so it follows a sched.. the bus leaves right on time. One visit to the Bell of Happiness is enough for me and my family. Glad we get to experience it once ❤
