This place is less than an hour’s bus ride from Sapporo City Centre. Might I add, it’s best to book your roundtrip ticket online so as not to waste anytime queueing. Bus departing from the stations near Tokyu Hands leave on the dot, though getting a bus on the way back to Sapporo may be a little tricky. This town is very walkable, quite peaceful and has a wonderful scenery of the autumn foliage during and after your ride. There is a spronkle of foot baths along the way, don’t forget to bring your small towel to dry uour feet with. All in all, I highly rcommend Jozankei Onsen Town- no wonder it is quite the favourite among locals.

There was also an abandoned hotel in the center of the town. I guess abandoned hotels are a common sight in hot spring towns. It's called the inner sanctum of Sapporo, so I think there must be a certain demand for them. Well, it was an unnecessarily large building, though.

This hot spring resort is located near Sapporo. There are many large inns lined up, and it is a popular tourist spot. If you look at the hot springs alone, there are no public baths, so you have to stop by an inn to take a day trip. Because there are many large inns, the hot springs are highly circulated, so you can't relax very much. I think it's a good hot spring resort for families and children.

It is a hot spring with a history of over 158 years because Miizumi Jozan created a spa and opened it in 1866. In 1869, the Hokkaido Development Commission was established and it seems to have been earlier than the decision to call it Hokkaido. It is also a short hour's drive from Sapporo city name. Before 1970, the Jozankei Railway ran and you could enjoy train travel. It is a popular spot to spend a relaxing time as a back room in Sapporo.

It's a lovely place with very scenic views of the mountains and rivers.
There is a also a free footbath which you can use, but warning... it is likely TOO HOT for you to really put your foot in. (41C). HOT!!!!!!!
Once more, I urge you to go only in winter, when there is snow, as the place transforms into a whole new world.
Try their suspension bridge, because it has a lovely view, plus, it does move in suspension when you jump on it. Hehe... -_-"
If you are from Sapporo station, you can go to th Tourist Information Counter at Sapporo Station itself (outside JR station), and there is an excellent tourist deal for you.
A Jotetsu Bus deal (1800 yen per person, including a bus ride from Sapporo to Jozankei + an onsen entry of your choice to any of the listed hotel).
Very worth the price, as an entry fee to an onsen is already 1500yen. And a 2-way bus ride itself costs 1500yen too.
Where to take bus? Sapporo Bus Terminal (it is at Sapporo Station itself, outside JR Train station). Take bus no.7, bound for Jozankei. (platform 12).
Where to stop? My advice is stop at Jozenkei Hotel bus stop. The bus has English announcements so you wont miss it.
A must go...pls make time for it.

Thirty minutes outside Sapporo is a great selection of Onsens at Jozankei. Hotels offer the traditional Japanese experience with Tatami rooms and lovely food. We go at least once a month.
Or try one of the many day use onsens in Sapporo which only cost 400-500 Yen. A great way to try out the onsen experience cheeply. They are a great way to relax.

I'll start by saying it's must-go destination.
The scenery there is amazing, simply beautiful.
And there's hot spring literally everywhere lol.
From Sapporo, it is easy to get there. If you're staying near Susukino, you can board bus No 7 or No 8 to Jozankei from the bus stop just right in front of Susukino Lafiler.
A half day there is sufficient in my opinion.

Jozankei is a must-see if you like onsens and nature.
This small town is easily accessible by bus. Several bus companies will reach it in an hour - excluding traffic jam - and you can also ride the town bus departing from Susukino or Sapporo Station.
If you don’t speak Japanese (as is my case), it will be tricky to find information, but as usual in Japan, people are so lovely they will do anything to help you out, even when communication is difficult.
Upon first glance, the town looks ugly, devoid of charm. We stopped at the tourist office, and a wonderful lady - who did not speak English but her smile conveyed it all - provided us with information, maps, wrote the bus numbers and times and suggested some restaurants.
Then we started following the visitors’ trail (easy to spot) and enjoyed every minute of it.
From outdoor foot bath to cooking your eggs, the cosy souvenir shops, the beautiful shrines, the trail in the snow, the cute suspended bridge, the scrumptious ramen and - the highlight of our visit - the onsen, we made great memories!

Went to Jozankei for the Yukitouro ("Snow Candle Way"). Very grateful to Miss Harumi of Ibis Style Sapporo for helping to reserve Jotetsu Kappa Line (direct bus) tickets. Board the 3 pm bus at Sapporo Station Bus Terminal and arrived at the onsen town 75 mins later (not 56 mins as claimed) despite the light traffic. Got off at Jozankei yu no machi (1 stop after Jozankei Jinja shrine stop) near Iwato Kannondo Temple and the Longevity and Health Footbath (FOC) and walked to Jozankei Jinja shrine, passing by the statue of Jozan Mizumi, the founder of the onsen town, Gensen Park with a footbath (FOC), and the half-frozen Toyohira River. We reached Jozankei Jinja shrine entrance well before the 6 pm light-up, so decided to have early dinner at the only restaurant nearby. We were pleasantly surprised to find out it was a Matsuo Jingisukan branch.
Everyone seemed to have the same plan: take the 8 pm back to the city. We left the temple grounds at 7.45 pm but a long Q had formed at the Jozankei Jinja Mae bus stop outside the shrine entrance. When Bus 7 arrived there was only standing room. We decided not to board and wait for the 9 pm bus instead. Just then an almost empty Bus 12 arrived. We were glad we took Bus 12 back because it worked out to be cheaper and faster. Bus 12 terminates at Makomanai station (the terminal station of the Nanboku subway Line), which is on the outskirt of Sapporo city, so avoided the many traffic lights in the city centre. Bus 12 is not as well known to tourists as the buses departing from Sapporo Station Bus Terminal. The bus took only 45 mins (610 yen) to get to Makomanai station while the subway took 13 mins (290 yen) to reach Nakajimakoen station (3 mins walk to our hotel.)

Been to Jozankei town - Hoheikyo Onsen. The open onsen overseeing the snowy night sky with trees were simply spectacular. The only regret was we were there by evening & the last bus depart to town was 1950hrs …should have spend at least half a day, have meal & take our own sweet time to bath in that miracle water, skin feeling so much smoother. Really worth going if you do not have much days to spend & only centered yourself in Sapporo during harsh winter.

Is it possible to get a taxi in Jozankei area itself - to move from one hotel to another? We are planning to take a bus there, but the bus we are taking only stop at Hotel Millione and we need to drag luggages and 2 kids to another hotel in the area which is about 1km away

You should ask the hotel people. We did not use taxi only walked and then to the hotel bus to go back to Sapporo. I was unable to find out online whether there are taxis in Jozenkei. Please contact the hotel you are staying and enquire with them. They are usually very helpful especially to foreigners. Sorry not to be too helpful :(

Hello. I am planning to visit Jozankei in February with my wife. We would like to reserve a private onsen but the hotel we booked doesn't have one. Is it possible to book a private onsen in other hotels and are there any restrictions on time available for booking; e.g. non guests can only book from 12pm-5pm?
Written January 24, 2019
Hi, you can go to the website - jozankei Onsen travel guide japan and choose a hotel that contain private onsen in their room. From my knowledge, private onsen is with hotel room stay but not walk-in guests. Good luck!

Travelling from New Chitose Airport to Jozankei Onsen
Hi Everyone,
I'm planning to visit Hokkaido this February 2019 and I'm wondering if there are any buses travelling from New Chitose Airport to Jozankei Onsen after 5pm? So far, most the bus lines I have seen so far going to Jozankei does not have any trips after 3pm.

Since we stayed at the Jozankei View hotel...we did not pay for the entrance fee. Fee is ¥1600 for adults n ¥1000 for childre. They charge ¥300 per towel rental. You shld check the net for various places and their related fees. All are different. At the hotel it was nice. They had 2 swimming pools for kids with slides. A lovely place to stay with huge buffet at night.

Hi I intend to visit in June, and planning to rent a car. Do we need to make any bookings for Onsen visits, since so many hotels offer them?
Written April 5, 2018
yes, there are a variety of Onsen options in the area; with some open to the public on a day-entry basis. that said, if you intend to attempt entry to a better rated Onsen, then its best you make reservations. do a web search and identify the Onsen(s) you're likely to wanna visit > drop them a mail & liaise accordingly. it'l be such a disappointment for you & the gang to drive all the way there, and not get what you'd rather have...think about it?

Are there any onsens that will allow foreigners with tattoos to enter?
Written February 10, 2018
I am sorry you are not allowed to go public onsen with tattoos. You may try to use stickers to cover it if the tattoos are small. Alternatively, you may book a hotel room attached with a private onsen.
