Made a stop here on our way to Noboribetsu from Sapporo. It was well worth it. Free parking provided. There is an electric bus to take you in (300 yen) or you can walk the 1.5km trail to the dam. We decided to walk to enjoy the nature. Half the way is a tunnel which was cooling & fun. We did however pay to take the bus back as it was tiring.
The dam area itself is pretty huge. You get to walk on the dam as well as around it. There is also a house of sorts above the mountain that overlooks the dam. No entry fee throughout. Enjoy the view of the lake & its surrounding mountains. I manage to snap a rainbow in the middle of the floodgate discharge. It is actually quite calming just spending time admiring the beauty. If you are adventurous there are handful of trails through the mountains.
Overall it was a good break from the long drive. Love the natural surroundings.

We went to Jozankei Tourist Information Centre to look for transport arrangement. As the shuttle from Jozankei Tourist Information Centre to the dam was not in service yet (service would start from 1 October 2016), the staff there helped us to call a taxi (metre fare around 1700 yen) .
The taxi stopped at the ticket office which was also the boarding place for hybrid electric bus. All visitors should use the hybrid electric bus (600 yen for return trip) or by foot (20-30 minutes' walk) to the dam. Free parking spaces available for visitors by car.
As it was too early for autumn foliage, the place was very quiet. We bought return tickets and took the electric shuttle bus (operated at 15 minutes interval) to the dam. The driver stopped at various scenes for passengers to take pictures. Then we took the lift car (free of charge) to the Rest House (restaurant) and Houkeikyou Observation deck which was actually a very short ride.
If you enjoy hiking, you could walk from the foot path beside the Rest House uphill to have a different view. We did not go to the top but just walked for about 15 minutes uphill to the Miharashi Observation Platform to take some photos and got back to the Rest House for a simple lunch.
View of the dam and it's surrounding was beautiful but it would be even better if the leaves had turned red.
We went back to the ticket office by electric bus and the staff there helped us to call a taxi back to our hotel in Jozankei. We had to wait 45 minutes for our taxi to arrive. It worth to visit the dam though it's too early for autumn foliage!

Went there with a light snow but the autumn leaves are so beautiful. This scenery sums up why Hokkaido is one of the most beautiful place in the world

A short drive from the onsens to the carpark where you hve to board the eco-friendly electric shuttle. Short ride to the dam through a tunnel.
Quiet, serene closeup of the roaring dam. Pick up some snacks at the hut on the hill.
