- Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada8,617 contributionsInteresting Market with Pricey SeafoodWe poked around in here for a bit to see if we could find a good deal for some fresh seafood. We are sure it is good but a lot of the prices were higher than we expected. There are quite a few small restaurants but they close pretty early and some were sold out of items like urchin when we went so it might be worth going early. We feel as though the tsukiji outer market is more exciting and our friend shared with us that Otaru is more exciting if you're looking for market fresh seafood.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 23, 2023
- JacquelineMaSingapore, Singapore782 contributionsGood place to get fresh seafoodSmall seafood market that only sells fresh fruits. Because the stalls face outwards you don’t feel claustrophobic when it’s crowded. Not the cheapest place to get Kaisendon but I will still go because the seafood was very fresh. Go before 10 or else you will have to queue for the popular restaurants. Don’t buy the fruits though you can get cheaper fruits elsewhere.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 25, 2023
- Dingo_6152Fremantle, Australia3,327 contributionsFresh Seafood everywhereLocated a short walk from Odori subway, Nijo market is a small fish market, smaller the Tokyo but larger than Otaru. It has about 15 fish shops/fishmongers selling that day’s catch. The array of fresh seafood on display, including zuwaigani (snow crab), tarabagani (red king crab) and kegani (horsehair crab), hokke (mackerel), uni (sea urchin), ikura (salmon roe) and hotatakai (scallops) is impressive. Unlike other reviews, I didn’t feel it was a tourist trap, probably as I wasn’t purchasing any seafood there. It maybe that stallholders feel aggrieved with tourists who get in the way of genuine buyers – certainly didn’t feel as claustrophobic and frantic as the Tsukiji market in Tokyo. Plenty of good photo opportunities, including the quirky statutes at either end of the arcade. We enjoyed a couple of bowls of the traditional kaisen-don, which is a dish with a variety of sashimi on plain hot rice, together with some local miso soup, at one of the restaurants in the market.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 16, 2024
- Mark TAgeo, Japan603 contributionsthe center of breakfast in Sapporo.Susukino is the center of dinner at night, and Nijo market is the center of breakfast. Seafood bowls were so expensive. In particular, uni and ikura were so delicious but pricey. I ordered the cheapest seafood bowl around 1600 yen. It was worth paying 1600 yen. If I had ordered an uni and ikura bowl, I would have paid 3000 yen at least. If you want something local in Hokkaido, please visit Nijo market to eat a seafood bowl in the morning.Visited July 2024Traveled soloWritten August 2, 2024

Also, in terms of variety and atmosphere, Tsukiji stands out. I want on a weekday morning but if you are not used to having fresh seafood for breakfast, you may want to go during lunchtime.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 8, 2024

This seafood market is rather small as compared to the Sapporo Curb Market. The shops here are selling fresh crabs, scallops, uni and many different kinds of dried seafood.
I found the place to be rather disappointing as there are limited shops and most of them are selling the same thing. Seems like a tourist trap to me.

Fish market, similar to Tsukiji in Tokyo, but smaller. We were happy we went, but were not overly impressed with the quality of oysters or shrimp sashimi that we enjoyed.
The market is a fun atmosphere and is worth a visit!

Nijo Fish Market is opposite Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade Section 1. The stalls mainly sell fresh seafood, some of which can be cooked on the spot. One of the more outstanding stalls sold a crab-related set consisting of crab gratin, steamed crab bun, and crab miso soup.
Using Sapporo Subway Station as the starting and ending point, my suggested path for a walking tour around the downtown area of Sapporo is as follows. JR Tower Observation > Former Hokkaido Government Office Building > Botanic Garden of Hokkaido University > Clock Tower > Sapporo TV Tower > Odori Park > Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade > Nijo Fish Market > Sapporo Underground Shopping Mall

The store at the corner closest to the traffic light, who has a small eatery acorss the road, which gave free crab samples. We bought the whole red flower crab, but found out later that half the red flower crab was stale and tasteless. Only half was served fresh and juicy ! What a let down.
Those who has better experience in other stores please give location and store name. I hope other stores are more ethical than this one.
We found eating in crab restaurant Kani Honke is more worthwhile. With good service and fresh crab given for about the same price ! .

Went to Nijo Market for a late afternoon lunch. Went around to see tt prices were very steep. But looking at the picture we thought it was worth it as the bowl was full. Went in to a shop nnthe first thing she asked at the table was small or large when we hve not even ordered anything. Anyway we thot a large bowl full of crab n salmon would be nice even though it was expensive. So we ordered ine bowl small n one large and added a fried rice to go with them. When the two bowls came, we then realised that both bowls came with rice hidden below the crab n salmon n roes tt looked like as if the bowls were filled with the seafood only. What a crab! Tts cheating at the highest order. With the big bowl of rice plus my fried rice, are u kidding!! Lousy lousy pl to visit. I love Japan but this pl is out to cheat you. Dont say i did not warn u.

Centrally located in the Sapporo City which allow easy access to the market. Fish looks quite fresh and the dried seafood looks good too. My mum bought some scallop at 4500 yen. But the market is too small to make it a trip worthy of travel so visit only if you are near the market and only if you have time.

I recommend a trip to Nijo market in the early morning followed by a walk at Tanukikoji (shopping street) in the late morning. Thereafter, you can enjoy a 5 star lunch at Ohiso (see my review of this restaurant) before taking a stroll at Odori Park. This takes up more than half a day and it is a relaxing itinerary.
Nijo market is a small place. Covering the entire market takes about 1.5 hours max provided you stop by half the stalls to shop.
1. Wide variety of fares
There are fresh, dried and canned seafood on sale. King crabs, snow crabs, shellfish, oysters, scallops, salmon, salmon roe... the list goes on. There are also cookies and chocolates from Shiroi Koibito Ishiya factory.
2. Fresh seafood to eat
Some shops have small eateries attached to it so you can buy the fresh seafood and have it prepared for consumption immediately. There are several proper restaurants too. Walk around before deciding on which one to try. I had my lunch at Ohiso due to its excellent reviews on TripAdvisor.
I would have given Nijo market 4 stars if not for my previous visit to Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market. In comparison, Nijo market is really much smaller and does not have the display of huge yellowfin tuna and other species of fish.
Some visitors may find Nijo market a little touristy but I will advise you not to avoid it just for that reason alone. It is still worth a visit especially if you plan to visit a few places on a trip like my suggestion above.

aloha,
It is walkable assuming the subway & station you get off at is at 1) Underground Pedestrian Mall (Pole Town & Aurora town), 2) go up to street level on the Tanukikochi Shopping street, 3) go east to the end of the street, 4) proceed about 2 blocks to Nijo Market. Except for the last 2 blocks, you will be covered and not exposed to rain or snow. With so many shops & eating establishments to see, it will seem like a short walk.

My wife and my friends did buy some dried scallop in the nijo market. They said that it is less expensive than in HK and the morning market in hakodate. We have shopped around in the nijo market, dried scallop of the same quality cost the same in different shop basically. One or two of the shop keeper did offer us a very low discount. Hope it can help you.
