I decided to visit this place for the Hill of Buddha. This is one of Tadao Ando's masterpiece sitting on a huge site with a hill of lavenders surrounding the Buddha. A magnificent reflection pool was set at its entrance. The cemetery was nowhere in sight but the row of Easter Island statues and Stonehenge full size replicas can be seen in this huge site. This is a real gem!
The only difficulty is the limited bus service here. I came by bus 106 after visiting Takino Suzuran Park. Bus 106 originates from Platform 2 at Makomanai Station to Takino Suzuran Park and return to the Station. A direct bus 102 also originating from Makomanai ply to this place too.

Our objective to visit this cemetery/memorial park is to experience Tadao Ando’s architectural inspiration. Completely humbled by the experience and the way Ando planned the theatrical entrance and the genius design of the Buddha half hidden under the lavender field. It pays homage to Hokkaido and provides visitors with a spiritual cleansing effect.

If you're short on time and can't make it to Chile's Easter Island, I've found a great alternative. The Moai statues here are remarkably similar, providing a comparable experience. Additionally, there's a Stonehenge replica that saves you the trip to the UK. It's a convenient way to see these iconic sights without the extensive travel.

I went there with my mom as it said the lavenders are in full bloom. Sky was gray though, with some rain. Very strange collections of Moai Statues, Gargoyles, stone Henge, and Buddha with lavender field. The dome/ lavender hill hide the Buddha, in a beautiful concrete housing designed by famed Tadao Ando. Take subway to Makomanai. There are buses but infrequent. I used taxi and had it wait for us until we finish.

We were two couples travelling to a small ski resort close by when we say the heads on the bus on the way. After a few minutes at the snow park and realising the sleds were very small and designed for children we deciding to hike to the heads to see what they were. It turned out to be this cemetery. Here there was also a replica of Stonehenge a Giant Buddha. Along the hike we stopped in to see a frozen waterfall and enjoyed walking in fresh ankle deep powder. It was definitely a highlight seeing the cemetery and made a day that could have been very disappointing remarkable and memorable moment for our holiday. If you are in the area definitely worth a call in to check it out.

Very beautiful, appealing, both in summer and winter! The Hill of the Buddha ( by Tadao Ando) plus the Moai statues are wonderful. There is also a Stonehenge replica.

Stumbled across this place on a bright Monday morning and very pleased we did. What a random thing but very beautiful and grand. Couldn’t understand any of the whys or what’s about the place as it’s pretty much all in Japanese but it was free to walk around and we ended up spending nearly an hour visiting the different statues on the site - Stonehenge, a giant Buddha and the Easter island figures. If you’re passing and got time, take the time to stop!

Easy half day trip from Sapporo. About a hour and half trip by train and bus. Start from the Odori Station, take the JR Namboku line to the Makomanai Station. Go to the bus stop in front of the station for local bus #106. It’s about a 20+minute ride up a hill with several local bus stops and get off at the Takino Cemetery stop (can’t miss the large entrance with iron gate and visible Moai Statues).

My wife and I were lucky that it was a clear sunshiny day. The Moai statues were stunning to see in person. As you walk the grounds there were many other Buddhist statues and a collection of stone objects to see. Plus the Hill of the Buddha statue is also located at this same location. A nice day excursion from Sapporo well worth seeing that my wife and I totally enjoyed.

I visited with my family on 9/11. I was surprised at the moai that were lined up. I'm not surprised because it was my second time, but I think it's still spectacular and worth seeing. And the Great Buddha with a head. I think it's worth seeing too.
