北海道大学キャンパス内のポプラ並木あたり。旧5000円札の新渡戸稲造の銅像です。北海道大学の前身である、札幌農学校の卒業生であり、のち札幌農学校の教授にもなられた、北海道大学にゆかりのある人物です。

北大キャンバス内のポプラ並木の傍に、札幌農学校第２期生であり後に教授となって赴任し、北海道の開拓事業と農業の発展に大きく寄与した博士の胸像が建っています。
広く海外で研鑽を積み、東京帝大、京都帝大などの教授を歴任し、教育及び多岐に渡る業績により、日本が世界に誇る人物の一人です。
が、入学した頃は、短気で負けん気が強かったそうで、クラーク博士が残していったキリスト教に感銘を受け、メソジスト派の洗礼を受けて以来、従順になったので、ニックネームが”モンク”になったという逸話の持ち主です。
農学校の同期生には宗教学者の内村鑑三、北大植物園初代園長の宮部金吾、小樽港に世界初のコンクリート防波堤を築いた土木工学博士の廣井勇等、錚々たる著名人がいます。

北海道大学の前身、札幌農学校の２期生だったとは初めて知った。
卒業後、東京大学へ再入学したりアメリカ、ドイツに留学したが、閉校の危機にあった母校農学校の立て直しをしたという。胸像があるのはその貢献からだろう。

北海道大学全身の札幌農学校出身の新渡戸稲造さんは、教育者で「武士道」の著者でもあり、当時国際連盟事務次長までされた方です。世界に誇る日本人が、ここにいらっしゃいました！

やや寂しい

札幌農学校の第二期卒業生であり農学部の教授でもあった新渡戸稲造氏の像です。大学だけでもなく、国際活動でも幅広く貢献されてされた氏ですが、銅像のある場所としてはポプラ並木が近くにありますが、完全に大学の外れでもあり、やや寂しい気がしました。

花木園

北大の有名なポプラ並木の横にある花木園の中にある胸像です。外側からでも見えますが、花木園は閉まっていないので近くから見ることができました。新渡戸稲造は札幌農学校で学びました。

黄色く色づいた木々を背景に立つ胸像

ポプラ並木近くに胸像がある。像の後ろにある木々の名前はポプラではないと思うが、黄色く色づき、なかなか趣きがあった。この時期ならではだろう。新渡戸稲造といえば２００４年まで、樋口一葉の肖像に代わるまで、５千円札の肖像に使われていた。そのことも２０２４年に津田梅子の肖像に変わると、忘れられてしまうのだろうか。

大学内を散歩中にポプラ並木へ行きました。綱で封鎖されていましたが、その隣には銅像があります。新渡戸稲造さんはお札の人というぐらいで北海道大学に縁があったとは知りませんでした。

日本国内よりも外国に有名な方だと聞きました。場所はキャンパスを南北に通る道路を北上して総合博物館左折（西），ちなみにこの東西の小道は新渡戸通りと言いますが、この小道を徒歩３～４分のところに有ります。
