If you are short of time, skip this place

The location of this place is a bit out of the way. When we went there, a teacher brought a group of primary school students to visit it. I think it's more for education of local children. Unless one likes fish a lot, and a tourist, otherwise you don't miss much if you skip this place.

School of Fish for Humans

This is a very educational museum for Japanese fish. Children will enjoy this place, especially if they like fish. Parents can encourage further education for them too. I came here during winter, so snow covered most outdoor part of the museum; I believe it would look much different in other seasons.

Lots to see and learn.....if you like fish
Jul 2016 • Family
We spent more than an hour here because we enjoy fishing and want to learn more about fish, particularly those not found near our home.

The museum has three small outdoor ponds with salmon a person can feed with a 100 yen bag of food, an indoor display showing the life cycle of salmon which is mostly in Japanese but the illustrations are clear, a below-ground viewing site, and some aquariums containing species not familiar to us.

Pretty good considering the price of admission: Free.

It is at the edge of a large park and near a river, so walking there from the train station was quite pleasant.

Not great....

Travelling with a keen fisherman sometimes has its pitfalls - this was one of them. We decided a stroll along the river was a good option from downtown Sapporo. That's about 9kms of similar looking riverfront, so I was hoping it would be worthwhile given the time spent getting there. Unfortunately we were both a little disappointed. It might be interesting for young children, but if you're an adult I am sure you could find more interesting things to do in the area.... And as for the walk - we took a taxi home!

Fun for the kids

I'd cycled by this place hundreds of times without noticing it, but it's a nice spot for picnics and fish-watching. Indoor exhibits show the salmon life cycle. In the fall you can watch spawning salmon from a below-water observation room.

An outdoor poor is filled with Japanese huchen, the largest freshwater fish in the country. These purplish evil-looking salmon can grow more than a meter long and weigh up to 35 kg.

The adjacent Sakana-kan (Fish House) has small aquariums of freshwater species native to Sapporo, as well as a couple of invasive fish species. Not much in the way of English, but lots to look at, from fish to reptiles to amphibians. Don't miss the palm-sized freshwater flounders!

The museum is free (parking is extra). 100 yen gets you food for feeding the huchen. It's near the Makomanai Skating Rink, just at the confluence of the Makomanai and Toyohira rivers. See the English-language website for subway and bus access information.
