Nine promenade for strolling
Mar 2018 • Couples
During our visits to Xihu, we used to stroll along the beautiful promenade along Bei Shan Road after touring along Bai Causeway. The place was very quiet with historical structures on one side and the lake view on the other. By late March this year, we again strolled along this promenade twice, once after viewing the Enduring Memories of Hangzhou at night time and in the morning on the following day. It was really a nice experience to view Xihu in such a relaxing way. Recommended.

Beautiful promenade facing Bai Causeway
Mar 2017 • Friends
After walking through Bai Causeway, again we strolled along the beautiful promenade of Bei Shan Road back to Wulin area. The walk was pretty and enjoyable. On left hand side there were a few famous hotels (in past time) and many historical buildings while on right hand side was the scenic Xihu with Bai Causeway at the background. The city authority has exerted much effort in beautifying the promenade including landscaping. Highly recommended.

World Class Promenading

The tourist brochures handed out by many hotels in Hangzhou describe Beishan Road as "the most beautiful street in the world".

Allowing for a little patriotic hyperbole, I must admit that Beishan Road is an incredibly beautiful boulevard and well worth spending two to three hours promenading up one side and down the other.

Every step takes you past historic sites and scenic spots stretching back over thousands of years of human history in his region.

Beishan Road literally means "Northern Hill Street" because it sits underneath Baoshi Mountain, which dominates the north western shores of Hangzhou's West Lake.

It is lined with huge and ancient plane trees, which arch across the road, giving a tunneling effect.

On the eastern side of the road is West Lake and the many historic sites and scenic attractions that the lake has to offer. There are many parks and gardens here, where you can sit and rest, enjoying the breathtaking views across West Lake.

On the western side of the road are many fine houses, mainly built in the 1920s by rich Chinese, government officials or top military. Many of these have subsequently been turned into restaurants or bars.
