One of those amazing places in Hangzhou that should not be missed
Nov 2019
There are a few of those active pharmacies of traditional Chinese medicine, each interesting and different in its own way, That one is special because of the very informative museum it has (with lots of English explanations and a few English tours a day) and also because of the amazing 19th century Qing dynasty immense building that houses the place. You can talk to the doctors/pharmacists, and watch them preparing the various medicines. It is an informative and special museum we have not seen anywhere else in Asia. The presentation of the various herbs, flowers, minerals and animals used in TCM is well presented and fascinating. Worth at least 2 hours of your time.

Fascinating public practice of Chinese medicine and apothecary

During our 22-day grand tour of China, our visit to the oldest pharmacy in China was a huge highlight. On Hefang St, the famous pedestrian street of shops and temples, this dispensary offered medical advice, herbal medicines, and a vast museum of artifacts.
After a woman wearing a white clinical long gown "read" my tongue, she diagnosed that I must have a heart condition, which I don't. She took my pulse and said I was "OK."

Learning about Chinese Medicine
Nov 2018 • Friends
We strolled through this as we were not much acquainted with history of Chinese medicine. Spent some time looking through the Chinese herbs but there wasn't a guide there to explain about the usage and benefits of each, as everyone there seemed to be busy with their own tasks and their customers. There were pharmacists and chinese physicians, and also watching how the medicines were dispensed and packed was quite interesting.

Very Interesting BUT be careful !
Sep 2018 • Couples
We were given a very interesting talk by one of the Doctors and then a "free" consultation where we were told some very serious things which alarmed us - they wanted us to spend over A$3000 on herbal medicines & found out later that we would not have been able to bring this quantity back into the country. Other members of our tour were also given alarming consultations & encouraged to spend large amounts of money. Very interesting to visit but safer to take the information home to your regular physician for further treatment.

The place to learn about traditional Chinese medicine
May 2018 • Couples
Our Travel China Guide itinerary included this visit with our local guide Joey. While we are generally skeptical about museums, this was more a learning opportunity about the use of traditional Chinese medicines from ancient to modern times - this is still functioning as a traditional medicine business. The information was accessible for English readers & I was so grateful that they didn't have many of the frustrating translation errors which occur when places rely on translation apps. It's not a place to hurry through or you'd waste your visit. Our guide Joey was great as he gently guided us through the various rooms, pointing out a few key features but otherwise leaving us to read & learn at our own speed while being nearby to answer questions.

Good to stroll through
May 2018 • Couples
We just strolled through, I cannot even remember if there was an entrance fee. I like that there is still an active traditional pharmacy inside. My assumption is, you should not buy there. There are little pharmacies all over town that have traditional medicine, I am sure the museum prices are at a premium. This place is not "must see", but if you are in the area I encourage you to go through.

Lovely experience. brings me 100 years back. Still original building with courtyard, many exhibits, whole process of gathering herbs, mixing, making the tablets / herbs/ powder. Not to be missed.

Was interesting to visit this working traditional medicine pharmacy. The children did not like the displays of dead animals and animal parts..

Interesting visit to a unique institute

Great foot massage! Interesting to get a diagnosis from a Traditional Medical practitioner. Whether you believe or not it was a novelty. Not sure about the cure all in 1 month though. Cost a little steep for the herbs, but each to their own.
