I have lived in Hangzhou almost three years and gone here countless times. It never gets old! For spring, I suggest the plum garden and bonsai garden near the northeast gate. Early to mid-March is best, but sometimes they start to bloom even in late February. We went on March 11, 2018 and it was perfect timing to see all the varieties in bloom, especially the bright pink double blossoms.

For summer, there's always a huge collection of tropical plants on display with creative displays. You can't take a bad picture!

For fall, there's lots of Japanese maples and other maples and gingkos that turn nice colors and around October the sweet osmanthus bloom. If you like the smell of sweet osmanthus, you have to go there to have a picnic under the giant osmanthus shrubs. Most are located near the east entrance to the garden.

In late winter you can check out the camellia garden which has an amazing collection of different species and cultivars! Magnolias will also start to bloom in late winter as well.

Great place for early morning walks. Excellent value since you can get in free before 7am. I wouldn't pay to get in here though. The plants aren't particularly spectacular.. been to better gardens before.

I can only describe it as ordinary. There is nothing to see in this botanical garden. It is just a very large park. If you like to see flowers, you can come and take a walk, because there are different flowers here. I came during the peach blossom season. There is a sea of flowers, but it is not spectacular. The pink ones are beautiful. There are also good restaurants nearby. If you really stay in Hangzhou for many days, you can come and take a walk. If you only stay for a few days, I don’t recommend this attraction.

All parks in Hangzhou have no fenced gates. This is one of the huge park with many many entrances, small paths to get in or out. Very convenient and very clean and beautiful at all angles.
It's a park inside city. So people won't get lost easily but it is a very large place for visit any time of the day.

Walked to the gardens from my hotel. Not an easy walk in the heat but the paths were good and gardens were clearly signposted.
Admission was 10RMB (£1.20).
The gardens are, quite simply, beautiful, a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of the shores of West Lake.
Do your research before you go, remember Google doesn't work in China. If you are a gardener there are lots of ideas and inspirations here.
Mid-September is when the gardens are at their greenest, I need to come back in the autumn for the colours, winter for the starkness and Spring and summer for the colours and smells.
Be aware that there are very few refreshment kiosks, so best to stock with water before you go

We went to this beautiful garden in spring (April) which is generally the best season for visiting Hangzhou. Trees, bamboos, bushes were in bloom, many shades of green and flowers to see. It is quite place with much less tourist, a perfect place to escape and relax from overcrowded Hangzhou.

Hangzhou Botanic Garden is rather sprawling. It is heavily wooded, and well laid out.Peaceful, relaxing, walking friendly. One of the premier places for dating or family trip. It is the best place to see carps measuring 1 to 2m long. Though suitable for travel all year around, Hangzhou Botanic Garden is at its breathtakingly best during Feb to March, when it is enveloped by a sea of plum blossoms, or June, when the pools are filled with lotus.

We were quite lucky in that trip. It was snowing since morning, but only mini drops, not even a snow flakes. But by the lunch time it got heavier. Our local friend suggested to go to the garden. We were so glad we did! Snow with blooming plum flowers......... we took countless photos. There were some people pull out professional cameras to take photos, even media crews. Interesting!
