The grounds of the pagoda were beautifully landscaped. it was a easy walking area for the most part. The lift up to the top of the pagoda was an easy to get to the top and see the city from the fourth floor. I was also able to ring the bell outside of the pagoda for ten rings. Good luck for me.

Six Harmonies Pagoda stands on Yuelun Hill in the south of downtown Hangzhou and northen bank of Qiantang River, around 6.5km south of the city center. A pleasant taxi ride to the Pagoda costs you about RMB 25. You may also take the public buses of Line Y5, K808, K599 and 504 at the bus fare of 2 or 3 yuan. Riding a bike to Six Harmonies Pagoda is not a bad idea if you are fit and like cycling. There is a big docking station below the Yuelun Hill.

By the main entrance up to the Pagoda and below Yuelun Hill, there is a clean and well equipped toilet designed for Liuhe Pagoda visitors.

The ticket office lies by the main enetrance to Lihe pagoda. Entrance fee: RMB 20 + RMB 10 for Pagoda climbing.

Climb over dozens of stone steps up to the platform on Yuelun Hill where stands the the Pagoda. Hangzhou is really a garden city which is still much greener though it is deep into the cold winter season in December. Just several steps below the platform of the hill, I grab a photo of the magnificent Liuhe Pagoda flanked by red maple trees and camphor trees.

The highlight for me is to climb up to the top floor, the 7th floor and have a bird-eye view of Qiantang River and surrounding hills. The closing time is 17:30. No smoking. It is stipulated that there is a control over the number of visitors inside the pagoda, which is limited to 200 people. If at a time 200 visitors climbing the pagoda, you have to wait. Now it is winter time, there are just a few of us luxurily enjoy the least tourist time inside the pagoda.

I really advise you not to go to Liuhe Pagoda. This pagoda is very gloomy and scary, and it is not well maintained. There is nothing to see! It is more comfortable to look at it from a distance than up close. It is a bit cold inside the pagoda. I walked with a lady I didn't know for a while, but we all gave up. A couple also walked two floors and left because they felt really uncomfortable.

Some people confused the Six Harmonies Pagoda (Liu-he-ta) with Leifeng Pagoda (Lei-feng-ta). The former is situated on the bank of Qiantang River, 3km southwest of West Lake, while the latter is situated on the bank of West Lake. While Leifang Pagoda is equipped with escalators and elevators and offers a fine view of West Lake and the Hangzhou skyline, Six Harmonies Pagoda is only accessible via an uphill climb and you have to climb steep narrow stairs to reach the top. From the top of Six Harmonies Pagoda, you can get a view of Qiantang River and the magnificient Qiantangjiang Bridge (You cannot see West Lake and downtown Hangzhou, which are blocked by the hills). Thanks to the location and the lack of escalators/elevators, the Six Harmonies Pagoda is a blissful place to escape the frenetic crowds of West Lake... (very harmonious indeed)

Climbing the pagoda requires a separate ticket from entering the park. When you buy your ticket at the park entrance, make sure you have 2 tickets (one for the park, one for the pagoda climb). If not, you have to buy another ticket at the pagoda entrance. On a hot day, it can be tiring to walk uphill to the pagoda and climb the stairs to the top of the pagoda. Take a break after climbing each floor, and bring along a bottle of water to hydrate yourself.

The pagoda was originally built in AD970 but was destroyed in AD1121. The present tower was built in AD1165. From the outside there seems to be 13 floors, but only 7 floors are accessible inside. Beside the pagoda is the ruin of Kaihua Temple. Part of the temple compound has been converted to a gallery showcasing the history, architectural styles and technical details of the pagoda and other towers in China. (The gallery is air-conditioned and is a nice place to chill in summer.) There is a washroom and a small souvenir shop with food and drinks beside the gallery.

Behind the pagoda is a series of footpaths leading up the hills. Along the paths are models of various pagodas in China, with different architectural styles. (Apply mosquito repellent if you climb the paths in summer.) Somewhere along the path you can also see the Six Harmonies Bell. Further uphill there is a washroom. The paths are mostly empty and are a good place to escape the crowds if the pagoda is engulfed by tour groups.

To reach the pagoda by public transport, take bus 4 from Longxiangqiao metro station.

The pagoda rests on top of a hill so you get a warm up before you hit the steps. It has several floors where the view gets better as you go up. However, no one is pressuring you to go higher so you can call it quits when you feel you have enough. Be careful with the stairs. They are steep and some flights do not have handrails making it harder to go down.. Look first then think twice before you go for the next flight of stairs.

This was one of my favorite spots in Hangzhou. Called "Six Harmonies Pagoda" in English, this twelfth century pagoda is located about 15 minutes away from West Lake, along the river. Although it's tucked into a hillside and feels quite far from the bustle of West Lake, it's still in a big-enough part of town that you're not going to have trouble getting a taxi there and back; there are also buses that head that direction.

The pagoda itself is simple but pretty, and you can climb pretty much all the way to the top and get a great view of the surrounding area. What set this pagoda apart, though, is the grounds. For one entrance fee (30 RMB when we were there), you get access not only to the pagoda but to some pavilions, statuary, and several gardens. There's the small but beautiful goldfish garden, with a lovely lily pond and pavilion where we escaped from the rain, and the pagoda garden, which is a set of paths through the wooded hills dotted with miniature replicas of other famous pagodas, mostly in China. It's really cool to compare the different architectural styles in the different regions, and even if pagoda architecture is not your thing, the paths are fun to wander around, with nice lookout points by the river and charming little rock picnic tables should you want to take a rest. I was really sad that we were there in a torrential downpour; if I'm ever back in Hangzhou, I'll pack a picnic lunch and wander around at my leisure.

Also, the bathrooms are impressively clean for China.

Every level displayed some beautiful art works base on some chinese legends. You admire the art pieces as you walk up the pagoda, so you don't feel tired at all. At the top, you will be greeted by a nice view.
