Excellent base to explore surrounding areas of tea fields
Sep 2019
Yangmeiling Village 杨梅岭 is an excellent base to explore Longjing Village and laze around in the trendy hipster cafes of Manjuelong 满觉陇. There are tons of boutique inns with amazing views of hillside tea plantations as well as local restaurants and tea houses serving longjing tea (dragon well) famous in this region. This is a lovely area not busy on weekdays and, in my opinion, one of the best/easiest getaways from nearby cities with crowds and endless malls. It may not seem like an authentic local village if that's what you're looking for but it's much prettier compared with others in the area with quite a few new buildings with Chinese elements mixed in with local houses. From Hangzhou East Station 杭州东站, it's a 40-minute taxi ride which should cost around 70 kuai. There's Bus#87 right by the gate on Manjuelong Road 满觉陇路 which comes by twice every hour that takes you to surrounding sights, but it's fairly easy to get a taxi via apps like Didi. To walk to Longjing Village (literally meaning dragon well), it takes less than 30 minutes to walk uphill to the left of the village gate, passing by free sights like "Empeor Qianlong's Ancient Path" 乾隆古道, caves, and the tea museum. Once you reach Longjing Village 龙井村, you can go right without entering the village and explore some relatively quiet sights that are not very impressive but relaxing to explore when not crowded, like "Longjing Tea House" 龙井茶室 and "8 Sights of Longjing" 龙井八景. There are also quite a few hiking trails in this area. If you walk right downhill after exiting the gate of Yangmeiling Village 杨梅岭, you will soon reach Manjuelong 满觉陇 area which is filled with very photogenic cafes that are pricey but often with cool decor, great views, and nice food/drinks, many including osmanthus which blooms here twice a year - once in late August/early September. Some of these places open 'til late. If you go downhill along Qianlong Road 乾龙路, the only road at Yangmeiling Village, you'll soon reach "Jiuxi Yanshu" 九溪烟树 (literally meaning "9 Creeks in Misty Forest") then "Jiuxi 18 Streams" 九溪十八澗, easy beautiful tree-lined walks along the stream with tea fields. To go to West Lake's Leifeng Tower 雷锋塔 or Lingying Temple Feilaifeng 灵隐寺飞来峰 with stone carvings, it's only a 15-20 minute taxi ride which should cost just a bit over 20 kuai.
