Lovely evening of Jazz and drinks at a great location near West Lake
Nov 2018 • Couples
Music by a Canadian band in residence was great, and we heard some jazz classics and a traditional Mongolian song. Drinks cost about $12 Canadian for wine, which was expensive by Canadian standards, but service was good and included tax and tip. Staff were friendly and the club was moderately full for a Wednesday evening.

Great atmosphere,reasonable food, unnecessarily expensive.

A very beautiful, yet intimate layout, which is actually suitable for listening to live jazz. The band was brilliant and I suspect they were from America, judging by their accents.
We got there at about 19:45 and had to wait till 20:00 to go in and then we had to wait till 21:30 for the band to come on. We ordered drinks and some cheeseburgers and to our incredulous surprise, a can of coke was ¥50!!! I thought it was a typo on the menu, so I confirmed with the waiter. There was no drink cheaper than ¥50, most beers were about ¥50 or more and the burgers were ¥50. I think it’s a bit too far when your soft drinks cost the same as your food.
However my wife and I enjoyed our evening and loved the live music, the atmosphere at the club was very good and we sat right by the stage so we could hear and see everything really well. We left starving and with a big whole in our Alipay but our hearts all jazzed up.

Cool place

Nice, cool Jazz bar close to the lake. Music played at a reasonable level so you don't have to shout when having a conversation. The place do get crowded and when it does the service comes to screeching halt, unfortunately. The drinks are done great.

good but not perfect

Location and style I would give 5 stars to however the service is not very good. Too much pedantic waffle about having to pay 400RMB to sit at a table near a window upstairs.

It is a good looking place inside though, quite cozy and dimly lit to the point where its hard to actually read the menu. Sells many imported wines and a great selection of cocktails and some good beer on tap at reasonable prices for what it is (Stella 0.5L - 65 RMB)

Has live music and bang next to the West Lake so I think its OK. Could be better though if a bit of effort was put in to it. Upstairs is smoking area.

Best jazz bar I've been to
Mar 2016 • Couples
It was pretty full on a Saturday and we were lucky to get 2 seats at the bar (of you are a bigger group, better make a reservation)
the music and atmosphere was relaxing and great, we could have stayed there forever.
The cocktails are delicious and since we were at the bar, we could see with how much precision the bar men prepared those. Prices are very good compared to hotel bars and much better; I have never seen such a long whisky list

Definitely going to go there again

I first found the JZ Jazz Club on a visit to China 5 years ago.

Situated near to West lake it is a perfect end to a day.

Like the big JZ in Shanghai, Hangzhou’s JZ Club features a nice, two-storey interior with a viewing balcony upstairs (the toilet is also upstairs too), efficient bartenders and fantastic waiting staff and some great jazz on any night of the week. They often pull international artists to the venue – not often big name artists but it is always a fantastic night's entertainment. The regular house bands provide some great music anyway. The club sells a wide range of drinks and bar snack's I reccomend the fruit bowl! JZ Club is a nice relaxed place to catch some live music unwind with friends all in a fantastic friendly atmosphere.

Good place, but very expensive
The atmosphere is really great, the band played great music. Only the prices are a bit to high. We paid 45 RMB for the cheapest beer.

The place to be, after dark!

This club/restaurant is a must. The owner, John, knows his jazz and he brings in international and local talent that keeps his customers happy.
The food there is great as well. Nice prices.

Classic but Emerging Jazz Bar
Mar 2013 • Friends
Still, one of my favorite places to sit down and enjoy some beers with oldies. It's said that the entire old building was a hospital during World War II. I think the name "Huanglou" means "the building in the color of yellow". Back in 2009 when I was brought into this bar by my best friend in Hangzhou for the first time, I was so into the mood and the music here. Just a small band with senior folks who seemed really into the Jazz performing. There was seldom younger people, and the entire bar was quite quiet, cause almost everyone was "drunk" in the Jazz. That's why I tend to recommend this place for everyone I know planning to visit Hangzhou.

But honestly, I won't use the word "disappointed" to describe the recent visit, since the both the place, the stage, and the seats are all same old same old, except for the people/guests, the music and the mood. There were so many young people, laughing and chatting pretty loudly. The whole place was so jammed, that it almost took 20 minutes for us to finally sneak two seats around the bartender. The band looks the same, but they've changed most of the songs into more "popular" ones, or more "ice-breaker" ones. They even sang YMCA with everybody standing up and dancing with hand moves.

And the bartender got me the wrong beer.

I will definitely go back to this bar next time, but I just miss the old "Huanglou".
