Hangzhou's Drum Tower is quite modest compared to the Beijing and Xi'an versions, but it is worth paying a visit. It is free to enter and is a pretty easy climb. It is 4 flights of stairs and gives good views of the surrounding area including the "Drum Tower Church", which apparently only allows foreign passport holders to certain services. The Drum Tower area looks like it is developing quite nicely with some quirky stores starting to move in. It is close to a pedestrian street and not that far from Hangzhou train station.

The Drum Tower is, on its own, a very interesting place. The cultural village around it is another reason to visit this site.
We spent 3 hours walking around the village and looking through the streets, full of souvenir shops, as well as a full range of other interesting businesses. There are plenty of eating places and coffee shops.
The prices here are very reasonable and we purchased many Nic Nacs for our grandchildren.
My advice, don’t miss it.

We were at the area covering QingHefang shopping district and passed by this building (we knew of its existence but did not think of making a trip specifically to check it out). We did not make a trip walking up the tower as we had not finished shopping.
We were walking and enjoying the buildings of the old area and saw the Drum Tower which had us staring in admiration for its architecture.
They creatively included some dummy soldiers 'guarding' the tower as in the ancient days, which was a nice touch.
Would recommend covering this attraction together with the nearby attractions (Qing Hefang area, etc).

Wandering to the end of the Old Street pedestrian walk, we were enchanted to find the recnstructed Drum Tower and Drum Tower Church. The Tower is a reconstruction (with little model soldiers in the parapets) and we didn't go up, but we visited the Church, built by Presbyterians in 1885. Unfortunately the Church was the scene of a government crack down just a year earlier in 2014, when police forciby removed a newly constructed cross - how sad. But the Church was open, and a member was kind to us when we came in to just look around (it wasn't Sunday, but a few folks sat praying in the Sanctuary). The square outside also features several pieces of interesting art - murals in stone and cement. The area is somewhat calmer and less crowded than the market areas a few blocks away.
