Just and see by yourself
Nov 2019
On the 4th and 5th of November of 2019 I went for the trip in China with Global Travel Experience Division to visit Xiaoshan district near Hangzhou city of the Zhejiang province. In this short article I'll describe you our two days trip around this magnificent area. I would definitely recommend you to go to these places which we have visited. Here is my personal experience from this interesting trip. Enjoy!

First of all we went by bus to the G20 Hangzhou Summit 2016 Main Venue at the Hangzhou Inter Expo Centre where monumental and modern architecture just blowed my mind. Especially in Great Hall for conference with huge flags of the most powerful nations of the world I could feel that magnificent spirit that bow my head down by this masterpiece of architecture and Chinese craftwork. Interior made by Chinese woodwork craftsmen full of 6 metres long handmade reliefs showing the wealth of Chinese history and very heavy doors made from one piece of precious wood. On the huge and rooftop you can find garden with gallery and spectacular view down to city.

The next stop was in Time-honoured Xutongtai Soy Sauce Production Factory where we found century long old place of the famous soy sauce production place. Huge tanks of reservoir of this liquid and hundreds of ceramic barrels were stacked into the composed mounds.

Then we went to the little village called Phoenix where we have visited Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall and museum in very decent and calm neighbourhood with tiny narrow streets and small square with cafeteria. Inside of the museum you can find historical artillery, dresses, objects and photographies of this bloody Chinese - Japanese great war.

From there it took around 15 minutes by bus to come to the lovely, old and refreshing property called Ocean&Bird AirBnb surrounded by nature and also by bamboo forest from the side of the road with big garden, bar at the reception, with a small square right in the middle of this complex with rooms around. It was the place where I would loved to stay overnight, but unfortunately we moved to the hotel resort.

On the other day the first place we visited was Xiaoshan Intangible Cultural Heritage Lace&Bead Embroidery Institute with homonymous name Xiaoshan Lihua Embroidered Pearl Lace Research Institute. It's a small first floor apartment with galleries, workshops and clothing. In this place you could find heritage of traditional Chinese art and craft - lacemaking, musical instruments, paintings and also traditional Chinese costumes full of vibrant colours and textile accessories which you can buy or even you can try to make it by yourself or under the directions of local mentors and teachers.

At the end I would like mention that this was the most interesting and beautiful trip for recent period
of my travelling time around Zhejiang province where I live and study for more than one year. Thank you for your attention. I hope my blog brought some inspiration to you - to my dear travellers.

Culture, history and entertainment in a natural setting

Smaller and less famous than Hangzhou's famous Westlake, Xiang Lake is a gorgeous place to relax without the crowds one typically finds at its more famous neighbor to the north. In addition to peaceful surroundings, Xiang Lake has a water park, ocean world, restaurants, hotels, sightseeing boats, an archeological museum and a gorgeous pottery gallery and studio built on the remnants of a very old and very big kiln.

If you enjoy nature and walking then go.

This place is off the beaten track. Most tourists to Hangzhou visit Xihu (West Lake) and the pagodas and move on. Xianghu was recommended by our taxi driver and was he right! Xianghu is great. If you have read or heard of Sun Wu and the book The Art of War, this is where he lived when he wrote it. His ancient military training academy is here. Also, archeological discoveries in the Kuahuqiao area of Xianghu make this the place with the oldest civilization in China, going back 8000 years. The Kuahuqiao museum documents the discoveries there very well and houses the area where excavations are still ongoing. Fascinating to be at the spot where humans lived 8000 years ago. World's oldest dugout canoe discovered here. History, scenery, culture and fresh air all in one place.

Much Less Commercialized and Crowded than West Lake
Sep 2017 • Couples
Xiang Lake (湘湖 also known as Xianghu Lake) is located in the southwest of Hangzhou (杭州) in Xiaoshan District (蕭山區) about 18 km by car from downtown Hangzhou. The original name of the area was Xiang Lake Tourist Resort Area, but it upgraded to become Xiang Lake National Tourist Resort Area few months ago in 2017. The discovery of Kuahuqiao Historical Site (跨湖橋文化遺址) in 1990 confirmed Zhejiang civilization started from here about 8,000 years ago. The 3,500 Hectare (8,649 acre) tourist resort area includes the Xianghu Scenic Area (湘湖景區), Hangzhou Paradise (杭州樂園), Oriental Culture Park (東方文化園) and Hangzhou ChangQiao Polar Ocean Park (杭州長橋極地海洋公園).

We only focused on the Xianghu Scenic Area – Xiang Lake. The 610 Hectare (1,507 acre) Xiang Lake is much more natural than the famous West Lake (西湖). We arrived at Xiang Lake by city bus just before noon. It was a cloudy day with occasionally showers and fog. The bus driver told us to start our journey at Kuahuqiao (跨湖橋) due to our intention of spending roughly 4 hours in the lake area. We learned the Kuahuqiao is an important monument but did not realize the one we saw was built later. The original can be seen in the nearby Kuahuquio Historical Site Museum (跨湖橋遺址博物館), where it showcases the excavation and research of the cultural site. Heading toward the northeast, we followed the beautiful trail next to the lake and crossed the 960 m (3,150 ft) long Yue Causeway (越堤) with seven bridges along the causeway. Once we were on the other side of the lake, we saw a large lotus pond with only few flowers because it was late in the season. Not so far from the lotus pond is the 128 m (420 ft) high King of Yue City Hill (越王城山). We skipped this attraction because it was raining and locals told us the trail is slippery. Next is the best scene we saw in our trip that day, which is just before crossing Feilon Bridge (飛龍橋). We took quite a number of photos and used it as the main photo of this blog. We also visit the Xiangpuguanyu (湘浦觀魚) after we found the Xianglifang Tourist Center (湘里坊遊客中心). All the routes we went were just within the phase I of Xiang Lake. The Phase II and newly completed Phase III are even larger than the original Phase I.

West Lake is too commercialized and crowded compared with Xiang Lake. I would like to recommend paying a visit to the Xiang Lake if you have more than 2 days in Hangzhou area. The sightseeing boat ride is another way to enjoy the magic of the Xiang Lake. You need a whole day to visit all three phases and see the beauty of it. The day we went was cloudy and raining, so we saw less than 50 tourists during our entire journey. One thing surprised my wife was the cleanness of the public toilets in the site. It was a huge improvement compared to her experiences in the past. I also found all the city buses were running by either LNG or electric. I do believe 2016 G20 Hangzhou summit plays an important role in what we see today. By the way, go to Xianglifang Tourist Center first and plan your visit accordingly.

A nice quiet and peaceful place
May 2016 • Friends
Visited this lake area on a Sunday morning. Is a peaceful and quiet place (compared to the more famous West lake). Enjoyed the slow 2 hours stroll around part of the lake. A few friends opt for bike rental. They covered more ground but a few areas were not easily accessible for bikes. For strollers safety the pathway were uneven so bikers will not go into most areas near lake. Also to carry the bikes over bridges can be tiring. Bikes are good for general overview of place and to cover more ground. Walk you get to enjoy the lake and "ancient" structures along the pathway. Along the route there are stops for refreshments. Also hawkers in the area selling cherries and tidbits. A pack of cherries should be no more than 20rmb.

Relaxing
Apr 2016 • Couples
If you have been to Hangzhou, Xiang hu (Xiang lake) won't be at the top of your bucket list but if you like nature and lakes it's a good place to see. It has nothing in common with the most famous lake in Hangzhou (Xi xu, westlake), it's out of the city (easy to reach by metro line 1, last stop) and it's still not very developed. You can find many nice views around it and if you want to explore it better i suggest to rent a bike (there are a couple of public bikes stations around it) and ride around it

Beautiful Lake
Mar 2016 • Friends
After having been to West Lake, I was uncertain of coming to Xiang Lake. BUT....so glad I did. So peaceful and quiet and very few people when compared with West Lake. You can take the subway and then walk to the lake (about 10-15mins walk) or take a taxi. Worth the trip.

Very scenic and busy

This area was about a 30 minute walk from the hotel but worth it. It was a Sunday with excellent weather so it was very crowded even after night fall. Give yourself enough time for a nice walk.

A beautiful and serene lake with great views and a great atmosphere
Jun 2015 • Friends
I visited "Xianghu" shortly after arriving in China and I was amazed by the beauty just a short trip away from my apartment. One must take line 1 (red) on the metro south to "Xianghu" then walk north on the main road that the metro exits to and about 15-20 minutes later you will reach the lake. A nice treat is that along the way off to the left one can see the miniature replica of Venice, Italy (known as Appleland) and you can stop by for a visit there as well. If you are staying in Hangzhou and looking for a nice and relaxed day activity, Xianghu is perfect.
