Guided tour by museum curator makes it a worthwhile visit
Dec 2018
if you have one to two hours to spare, highlighly recommend to take a guided tour by museum curator.

We were fortunate to get curator Mr Xue, who was very passionate and knowledgeable about porcelain to give us a quick tour of the museum. He gave us a brief history of the museum and the origins of the tianqing blue celadon and highlighted key pieces in the museum. Though it was a short brief tour, his lively briefing peppered with interesting trivia makes it an enlightening one hour.

The porcelain pieces exhibited in the main museum hall were painstakingly put together by the experts from the broken pieces found in the actual kiln site. An effort which took them 8 years.

There also a museum shop where one can purchase beautiful porcelain tea sets made by their potters.

Museum built over the remains of a Jiaotanxia Kiln

Under appreciated and a hidden gem of a museum found in Hangzhou. Most day trippers will probably not come by this place - but for those with a bit more time to spare and are interested in the history of porcelain and pottery will do very well to come by. The exhibits were nicely spaced out and we were lucky that the curator was able to bring us through the museum to explain the exhibits and give us a great overview of the history of pottery making in China. It was amazing that this museum was the exact location of a kiln that produced pottery/porcelain/cutlery purely for the emperor almost 800 years ago.

It was mostly empty when we visited save for the sporadic visitor or 2.

Toilets were clean and the gardens were well manicured. The museum shop sells high quality and authentic porcelain pieces at reasonable prices.....making this place an excellent place to consider picking an item or two

This is a specialized museum focusing on Chinese ceramics. There were many good exhibits and the grounds of the museum were also scenic and tranquil.

Great museum shop for Chinese porcelain
Jun 2017 • Couples
We visited this place to get some porcelain pieces from the museum shop. Our tour guide had recommended it as a place to get authentic good quality pieces for reasonable prices and he was right! The shop is small but had some nice vases and tea cups etc. Would recommend stopping by if you ware looking for good quality porcelain pieces. Alternatively you can go just down to the main intersection to the porcelain market (a huge building that sells everything from sinks, toilets and floor tiles to stores full of plates, cups and vases and just about anything to furnish a hotel). That market is located at #51 on the same street. The place is quick and easy to get to by taxi.

Hidden Gem

My parents and I were recommended to this museum by our friendly cab driver.
We were going to make our way to He Fang street but he highly recommended this place (15 minutes from West Lake).

Our driver called ahead and got an education officer to guide us through the museum.
It is an impressive museum with a kiln that has been preserved as a site for visiting.

The main museum is impressive with restored ceramics and kiln but it was our guide (whose surname I cannot remember now, a bespectacled gentleman) who made the visit come alive for us.

His depth of knowledge and obvious love for his work gave us a deeper insight on ceramic wares and porcelain in China.

The length that the museum went to restore the kiln and its wares left a deep impression. Surrounding this place is a park.

It is beautiful place. Well deserving of its accolade of "Outstanding Example of Contemporary Zhejiang Museums"

Highly recommended but you may need an hour to enjoy the place. I would stop by again to go for class onsite.

The Southern Song Dynasty Official Kiln Museum is praised as "the Outstanding Example of Contemporary Zhejiang Museums". There is a pottery bar in it with a unique style. One can see how pottery was made long ago and can experience the working process. That’s interesting. The wisdom of ancient Chinese people is so great!
