Immersed in Chinese traditional culture and classical beauty in China
Jul 2015
If you are interested in Chinese traditional culture and classical beauty of gardening, a jaunt to Xiling Seal Engravers’ Society is worth your time - exploring for 2 hours. Originally established in 1904, Xiling Seal Engravers’ Society (西泠印社) in Hangzhou is an association devoted to seal arts, the study of inscriptions on bronze and stones. In 2009, Xiling Seal Seal Engravers’ Society was listed as World Intangible Cultural Heritage. The seal arts society is located at the foot of the west side of Gushan Hill ( the Solitary Hill) in Hangzhou, extending to Bai Cause way linked to the east shore and to Xiling Bridge linked to the north shore. Gushan Hill is only for pedestrians and cyclists. So you may bike or walk to Gushan Hill from the east shore ( starting from the Broken Birdge (断桥) or from the north shore at Xiling Bridge (西泠桥). Walk along the south side of the hill and soon you will see a moon gate with white wall and back tiles facing the West Lake – the entrance to Xiling Seal Engravers’ Society. Free admisssion. By the gate, there is a kiosk where an old seal engraver is making the red ink on scrolls from seals (the carved names of the Top 10 West Lake Sights). For a few dollars, you are able to bring back home a souvenir of a scroll with seal red ink. On the hilltop, you will see the landmark of the society – Huayan Sutra Pagoda (Avatamasaka Sutra Pagoda). Built in 1924, the pagoda is a symbol of Xiling Seal Engravers’ Society. The octagonal pagoda stands on a Sumeru base with 11 stories. Each storey has an overhanging eave with a bell on the top. Buddha stautues are carved on the upper eight storeys, and Diamond Sutra is carved on the 9th and 10th storey below. On the bottom of the pagoda, Avatamasaka Sutra, Note on Avatamasaka by Li Shutong, an outstanding Buddhist master and the names of the donaters for the construction of the pagoda as well as the portraits of the 18 arhats on the upper part of the bottom.

Immersion in traditional Chinese culture
Jan 2018 • Couples
It was a lovely walk across a bridge and through gardens to the Xiling Seal Art Society. I was fascinated to find out what this place was about - the idea of stones seals seemed so remote to me. I discovered that the Society was founded in 1903 and strives to preserve the ancient Chinese tradition of making seals and stamps, which dates back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. The gardens of the Society are lovely, set on a hillside with views of West Lake, and the traditional buildings house examples of stone seals and attractive prints of engravings. It's a peaceful and instructive place to visit if you are interested in the cultural background of the Chinese.

Engraved in Stone
Dec 2015 • Friends
Chinese calligraphy is one art form of the complex Chinese character alphabet.

Carving stone seals (or stamps) is another, and no person of any position of importance would be without his own "chops" or seals, to sign important documents and impress others with how important he was.

The Xiling Seal Engraving Society was formed in 1904 in Hanghou, but its origins in fellowships dedicated to the art of seal engraving date back to the Qing and Ming Dynasties, and perhaps even further.

This "museum" is dedicated to recording for posterity the art of engraving stone seals, and hundreds of them are on display, including print outs of their engravings, which are framed and decorate the walls of the museum.

Once again, this is not a stuffy western style museum. It is set in beautiful gardens, with pebble rockeries, ancient bonsai trees, and peaceful water fountains and features that are designed to set the heart at ease.

Better yet, admission is free. Enjoy.

WOW!! Impressive!! Unforgettable Temple!!
Sep 2011
Basically had business trip to Shanghai & suggested that to drop by at Hangzhou for visiting some attraction places. However, I had been few places but this temple will never forget the green environment with nice scenary (like in the forest). There are few big temple to divide into few categories for your prayer, example if I were pray for "Good Health" than I need to climb up to another temple. And there you may able to see the real monks are worshipping to God on very traditional way..

If I were to choose to travel to Hangzhou again, sure im going to back there!
