If you are visiting the West Lake in the evening make sure to fit the music fountain display in your schedule. There are 2 performances at 7pm and 8 pm, but it is very popular. If you really want a good view (seats) you should be there at least 1 hour before.
The second evening we walked along the lake side and could see the fountains much beter although much smaller, but we no-one obstructing your view and no crowding.

While it was a cold night with temperatures in the 1-2 degrees Celcius, it was ultimately a heartwarming show that we got, and one that I think we would have regretted not going to if we had missed it. The music was familiar but the backdrop of the lake, the trees surrounding the lake and the hills that were also lit up in the distance made it look so magical. The musicians and the singers were amazing as were the dancers who were performing in 4-6cm of what must have been freezing water.
Truly an epic event to go to. I can easily say that being in that cold weather with my icy hands wrapped around a hot coffee, watching the dancers, violinists, pianists and listening to the singing, it will be something that I will remember always.

It starts at 8pm. They are very well organized with police, medics, toilet facilites and barricades. There is security check and heavy police presence.
There is always a crowd so arrive early. Lasts for about 15 to 20 mins. Mind your valuables, keep you bags and wallet in front of you.
If you can't get into the cordoned off area, the view is also pretty good just south of it. You just can't hear the music so well.

The West Lake musical fountain performance is free for all and takes place every night at 7pm and 8pm. The exact location is in front of Hyatt Hotel.. on the east side of West Lake. They will cordon off the area during the show for crowd control and even have 2 to 3 rows of free seats available so those infront can sit down and not block the view of those infront. I was there in March and thought the crowd control was very good even though there were many people. Be prepared to arrive early if you want to grab one of those seats. I arrived at the cordoned area at 7pm n had to watch the show from afar. In the end, we decided to wait for the 8pm show and was able to grab one of the last few seats... and my view was blocked by a big tree trunk. So all my pics and videos only captured 2/3 of the entire length of the show. But I enjoyed it nonetheless. It was very impressive.

Impressive light show every evening Stratton’s around 7pm. It does get fairly busy so be there early to get the best vantage point. I imagine you could get a bit wet if the wind is blowing from the wrong direction.

The West Lake is beautiful at all times of the day. The free Light-Fountain-Music show is a good way to enjoy the scenery in the evening. Advise arriving early to get a good seat and mosquito repellent, especially during warmer weather.

not the first time here... but have always enjoyed the show...
probably the only complaint is that its always crowded..
and not enough seats to cater to the large crowds on a daily basis
but the show is definitely fantastic

At about 7:15PM probably every night, the plaza in the middle of the new Central Business District in Hangzhou becomes a fairly land for about 30 minutes. The setting is breathtaking. On one side is the glittering giant gold sphere of the Intercontinental Hotel, representing the sun. On the other side is the sparkling silvery half moon shaped Hangzhou Grand Theater, representing the moon. In between there is a large fountain, where part of the light show takes place, and all around the perimeter, at a distance of up to a mile, stand rows of skyscrapers which are also used as part of the show. The light show lasts for about 30 minutes, in which the fountain has streams of water, like watery fireworks, shooting up into the sky, and moving in all kinds of amazing shapes. At the same time the skyscrapers are illuminated in a moving display of light art at its best. This is a far better light show than the one in the fountain by West Lake, which is amazing in its own right. Access is extremely simple - just take green subway line to the Civic Center station, and walk towards the shining globe of the hotel. The show takes place outdoors and is free. It seems to be running every night, but it is best to verify (in one of the tourist offices or in your hotel) before you come over.

Two shows per night. Our 7 pm one started 5 mins early
Crazy crazy busy, especially as it was Golden Week. If you want a seat in the 3 rows available you need to be there early
Good sound.
Too short a session though, barely 15 mins, and the scramble for seats at changeover is horrendous
Note - they do clear the walkway in front of the seats, totally. So if you q there you will be moved before the show starts.
