Jia, the owner, was willing to rent us (2 motorboys) 2 motorbikes to make a tour around Yunnan on our own, without having a chinese driverslicense.
No tour, just exploring on our own pace. Unfortunately there were only 125cc bikes available, but we made our tour (~2500 km).
The risk however was complete ours...., just as in all Azia-countries.
We were stopped and checked 7 times by the police for pasports, enginepapares and the non-existing chinese driver license.
The instructions and advice of Jia worked well: Play dumm. (wich is no problem I do not speak, let alone read Chinese, and the police do not speak and read English.
Just pretent not to understand the telephone-translations of the question: Show Chinese Drivers License.

I did an independant solo ride to Yunnan last December, renting a Jia Ling 250cc bike from ridechina.com. From the very beginning, I had already experienced ridechina.com professionalism. Mr Jah never fail to answer my questions and emails. Being the expert, he advised me on best routes to take, which I cant agree enough. From Kunming to Dali, Lijiang, Shangri La, Shaxi, Weishan, Lincang, Lancang and all the way to Mohan/Boten (China - Lao border), and east to Jiangcheng, Yuanyang, Jianshui, Fuxian Hu and back to Kunming...I found myself witnessing different views every single day. The bike which I rented didnt gv me any problem at all. Not once did the tire puncture or the engine break down. I thank ridechina.com, especially Mr Jah for all the tips and advises given to me.
STRONGLY RECCOMMENDED

A friend and me rented two motorcycles (250ccm Jialing) from Ride China. We didn't do a guided tour but explored beautiful Yunnan on our own so i can't comment on them.
The Bikes & and the equipment were in good condition. Besides just renting the rides they also offered help via phone all the time. We didn't need that service but once when we had minor technical problems (which Jia helped solving very quickly), but if needed they would also help out with things like finding good hotels, restaurants, attractions and so one.
Yunnan offers splendid and diversified landscapes & riding bikes is really the best way to not only see most of them in a short time but also get to remote places rather undiscovered. In only 17 days we explored a huge portion of the country including the hillsides between Kunming and Dali, mountainous areas in the north including tiger leaping gorge, the subtropic south around Xishuangbanna and the rice terraces around Lvchun.
If you plan to do a motorcycle tour in Yunnan or bordering provinces (and i highly recommend to do so!) you should definitely check out ride china.

My 19yo son and I did 6 day 'South of the Cloud' tour Nov 2013. We are Australian. If you are open to adventure and new experiences this is a MUST DO. Jia and Wong were so professional in every detail of our tour. We have travelled extensively across Asia on motorcycle and scooter over the past 4 years, and nothing compares to our Ride China Yunnan motorbike experience - it was exceptional. Beautiful country and wonderful people. A truly unforgettable 'local' China experience.
The riding is not for beginners, but once out of Kunming city, we were surprised at the lack of traffic and how enjoyable the roads and mountain tracks were.
We had a mix of local and western style hotels - even the smallest place was good quality by western standards.
We highly recommend Ride China - and plan to return to do Leaping Tiger Gorge ride in the future. Unique and away from the 'tourist route' - do it now !

9 days with Ride China to explore Yunnan territory make me and my love wife so memorable, challenging and fulfilling.

We had an adventures riding through the countless mountains of Yunnan.

Experiencing deferent terrain situation and sceneries every other day all the way in this adventurous riding

A spectacular sight disorder that we have never seen, since we traveled by riding.

Especially the trail and sceneries from Lijiang to Shaxi through village in the valley of Daju crossed Yang Tze river heading Tiger Leaping Gorge before arriving Shaxi was really adventurous and un forgettable.

To all who are interested in traveling by riding motor do not miss the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Yunnan.

Thank you Ride China especially Mr Wang such a caring and helpfully guide all the way in our journey.

I've ridden motorcycles through dozens of countries on five continents and southwestern China ranks as one of the best trips I've done. A riding buddy and I worked with Jah to develop a custom 10-day tour that mixed twisty roads, intriguing towns and villages, cultural sites and a muddy back road ride through the stunning Tiger Leaping Gorge. A lot was compressed into a relatively short time frame, but I feel that I have a very good overview of the Yunnan region after 2400 kilometers on two wheels. The bikes worked fine, accommodation and food were great and the route hit all the right notes for me. I plan to be back!

What a brilliant experience! Only the two of us on the tour on the one bike, with our guide Wang who was superb all round. If you can avoid it, don't ride two up on the Jai Ling 600 - would probably be much more comfortable one up. A fascinating glimpse into the fast changing world of rural China, with an efficient, friendly and indispensable guide from a helpful and trustworthy company - Ride China!!

If you want to experience some of the most beautiful riding roads, have a glimpse of China as it was and how it is changing, while staying away from western tourist crowds this is a trip to enjoy and remember for a long time. And you won't be sharing this experience with
hundreds of other BMW or Harley bikers. It is quite unique and exclusive
offer to a few "young at heart", skilled adventurers and it was well supported by knowledgeable professional fluent in english.
