Historical home of Zheng He
Apr 2017 • Friends
Laying outside of Kunning, visited the house of Zheng He, a Muslim of the Ming Dynasty who is a great emissary of that time. His muslim named was Mathatir which was not known by most of us.

A pretty well maintained historical place with a nice courtyard and garden.

A visit is recommended if you are travelling to the Southern part of Yunnan.

A sort of a pilgrimage for Migrant Chinese living in Southeast Asia
Jul 2014 • Family
For a number of migrant Chinese whose forefathers left the homeland of China in search of a better life, the journey to Kunyang (known today also as Jinning) in the Province of Yunnan is truly a meaningful one. It is in Kunyang that the Chinese Voyager Zheng He was born. The journey and visit to the Zheng He Gongyuan Park could constitute a pilgrimage back in time for migrant Chinese who cherishes the spirit of adventure and exploration.

From Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, one could easily take the Gaohai Expressway to Jinning to visit the Zheng He Gongyuan Park. Alternatively, one could take the local buses and travel through some of the villages between Kunming and Jinning to appreciate the suburban Chinese lifestyle. One should be ready to allocate half a day just to travel this route.

This vast park with lush greenery would best be appreciated by those who "dig history".... For a little "deeper" history of Zheng He and photos of the attraction, try the youtube search: "Zheng He Gongyuan Park" in Yunnan.

Entrance fee is minimal.

Picturesque Park, very few tourists, for those who already know history of Zheng He
I just visited Zheng He Park, after there was a few sentences about it in my guidebook. Since I studied He in world history, I found the park to be very interesting, as it was He's former residence. The Park has a very pretty statue of He which looks out of the city of Kunyang, the lake and mountains. Other highlights of the park is there is a temple, He's former residence with artifacts from his voyages and maps showing his voyages and a children amusement park which looked like it was used very irregularly (was able to walk around it, but no one was manning the small carosel). Very few things were labeled in English, besides signs directing for the different parts of the park, so if you are looking forward to learning about He, you won't. I went on a drizzly day and there were barely any tourists there. I was the only non-Asian tourist in the entire city, so if you are interested in getting away from tourists and want to see something historical I'd recommend it. As the guidebook had little information about it and no directions for bus, I went to the New Era hotel in Kunming and they arranged for a driver which was 350 yuan. The driver waited four hours when I visited the park. I walked around the park for two hours and then walked around the city. Many people were friendly and said hello. Not many tourists visit there which created many curious responses as I walked past smiling.
