You have to go.
This is a must-go for those who want to learn about Chinese culture in the context of the history of the Yunnan province. The most interesting parts are on the first floor, whereas the second and third are mostly more science museum- like. Go.

Time well spent
Nov 2019
We took a taxi from our hotel near the Kunming train station to the museum. The cost was 40 rmb and took us about 30 min. I was rather concerned that the driver was giving us a run around without realizing I had an old version of the city map showing the former address. Our driver was actually rather experienced and knew exactly where to go. I was relieved when arrived. The entrance was free and no id was required. We needed to go through the security check at the entrance,
The museum was 3 floors and each floor has separate rooms showing the history of Yunnan in a chronological order. There were some English explanations but the details were in Chinese only. The museum has an excellent representations of bronze ware jade, silver, embroidery...etc. The museum is not overwhelmingly huge and is very manageable to go through each room. Time spent could be a couple of hours to half a day. It is well worth a visit even though it is somewhat far away especially having to deal with the congested traffic.

WOW Astonishing- but the picture in the title is wrong
Oct 2019
The YPM has moved to the outskirts of the city but do not let that put you off this amazing new museum. The old Museum was in Guangfu Rd but the new museum has only just opened.

What you get are three floors of purpose built interactive displays. The ground floor holds a temporary gallery and then the history of the Long March with some fascinating artefacts. Go upstairs to the first floor to early cultures of Yunnan be prepared be astonished. The bronze work is incredible, delicate drums, stunning swords and a variety of crafts. Galleries of daily life, art, textiles and early history build into a comprehensive experience....it really is excellent.

Do take the audio tour as there is only limited amount of english translation.

This is also a free experience and enjoy every minute...

Excellent museum
Jul 2019 • Friends
Well, for a start, tripadvisor continues to show a wrong picture -- since 2015 the museum is in magnificent, purpose built, new premises. You can easily spend a whole day in this place -- every floor is well done, but the third floor is particularly good, especially the section covering the post-1900 period.
Purchasing souvenirs from here creates problems even for the locals -- effectively cash only.

Comprehensive collection from dinosaurs, bronze artifact, fossil to ancient human remains and recent history photos

This museum is newly built (I think that’s why it is not good rated yet), the collection is interesting and amazing, the decoration is very modern. A place worth visit for sure

one thing this museum needs improve is add more English description

Yunnan Provincial Museum is a great day out!
May 2019 • Family
If you are visiting Kunming in south Western China, a visit to the Yunnan Provincial Museum is a must. Its a newly built complex south of the city centre, and is easily reached by the very efficient Kunming Rail Transit train network, less than 20 minutes from the city.
The museum itself is stunning with an incredible range of fascinating exhibits tracing the history of Yunnan right through to incredible dinosaur displays, highlighting the jurassic past of Yunnan. There's a very special Kids section focussed on dinosaurs and archaeology, if you have kids from primary age right through to teens, this part of the museum is something you should not miss.
It's a full day out to cover the thousands of exhibits, and there's great for available at the museums restaurants.
The museum building is itself a great attraction, fine modern Chinese architecture at its best.

New building, new location, great museum experience
Mar 2019 • Friends
As I write this, Trip Advisor has an old photo up. The new building is state of the art, airy, functional, impressive. And the displays are very worthy and well done. We spent three hours at the museum, and if the descriptions had had a bit more English (titles in English, all info in Chinese), would have spent more time. There was an audio guide, but no indication that English language version would be available and you need alipay or other Chinese swipe capacity to pay for it. Because the location is relatively new, guide materials still show the museum at Wuyi Road -- a long way away. The concierge, Kevin, at the Crown Plaza helped us get a taxi -- our first effort failed as the guy was going somewhere else (another story). When it came time to go back to our hotel, we asked at the front desk. A super woman called the Lyft equivalent and gave instructions -- we paid her the fee and found the car and were whisked back to our hotel. That was amazing service.
I found my museum visit to be very worthwhile and offered great insights into Yunnan and Kunming history. The only books I have been able to find are in Chinese -- hope museum will decide to produce translations -- the collection deserves international exposure.

Interesting
Apr 2019 • Couples
This trip can easily be taken by cab from downtown for about 50 rmb. But getting back is more complicated and finding a cab challenging. We ran into some drivers who wanted to know where we were going, and didn’t seem reliable. So we flagged a taxi down fortunately. You can take the A1 bus, but where to catch it is also a challenge. This day trip is worthwhile because the ethnic minority village is opposite it, and you can do both in an afternoon.

Cultures on top of cultures
Feb 2019 • Couples
Firstly, this museum used to be in Wuyi Road in Wuhua District and there are still some old photos on Tripadvisor so be careful or you will end up at a (perfectly acceptable) modern art gallery. The new museum is located at No.6393, Guangfu Road, Guandu District. It’s large copper coloured front faces an equally large theatre hall separated by a large plaza.

This is actually one of the best museums I have seen in China so far. Instead of exhaustive collections of jade from dynasties past and fibreglass communist dioramas, equal weight is put on each stage of Yunnan’s storied history. The history is told plainly through the items and artefacts on display, with only a little bit of fibreglass here and there.

Prehistoric fossils fill the first floor and plenty of child-friendly displays of dinosaurs abound. Early hominids progress into Bronze Age artefacts including some stunning depictions of wild beasts, livestock, and their various interactions. Once Yunnan man learnt how to kill beasts, they then turned on each other and the warring states period is mostly spiky things to make you wince.

The floor above is a tour of the various cultural threads to Yunnan, including minority groups, the various flavours of Buddhism and The Kingdom of Dali. Only then do we reach the dynasties and mandatory revolutionary exhibit. These are all surprisingly balanced and go over Yunnan’s specific role in each stage of Chinese history.

Finally, there was nearly no English whatsoever besides the named item plaques so maybe an audio guide would be better than nothing. It is child friendly otherwise. The entrance is free. Depending on your tolerance for museums you can spend a few hours here or the better half of a day.
