Went with a friend, we had a gray time wondering around and looking at the items. Very limited English but even so things were interesting to see. The tad bit of English there was was useful and cool information. If you're looking for something to do it's something that's a definite option.

This museum has shifted from city centre to about 45 minute taxi ride away. If you can make it was worth it and it's free (if you bring your id / passports) - can probably spend half a day here. A huge well designed and laid out building on 3 floors it outs many European museums to shame. A great... More

The ground floor of the building which used to be the Yunnan Provincial Museum is now given over to an exhibition of contemporary Chinese art. For some reason the Provincial Museum is now located a very long way away, though you will not find this information on English-language web-sites of Chinese museum guides. About as baffling as our bathroom in... More

The outside of this building looks like one of those bland old Soviet-era huge buildings. Inside, though surprisingly it was not some dreaded dusty old-style museum but instead, everything looked reasonably modern and well-lit. The ancient Dian kingdom exhibits are interesting. There are some nice ethnological exhibits on another floor. Worth checking if you have enough of temples or ethnic... More

I don't understand the negative reviews of this place. It may not be the Met, but this is China, not NYC. My wife and I found the well-lit exhibits of native costumes very informative, not to mention colorful. And it's free.

This definitely isn't the best provincial museum in China, but it's free. I went this week to see a visiting exhibit of photos by two French photographers, Bruno Barbey and Marc Ribaud. Well worth while, but I think this visiting exhibit ends very soon. Visiting exhibits are always on the first floor, with the museum's permanent exhibits on the top... More

One of the principal attractions of the busy city of Kunming (another is Cuihu Park with its restful tea garden beside the lake), the Yunnan Provincial Museum now offers a nicely judged balance of exhibitions. In Spring 2013 the temporary exhibition was of European photographers' views of (mainly) China from the 1950s on, alongside the two floors of permanent local... More

They have a great display of minority nationality costumes & artifacts on the top floor. I visited this museum 5+ years ago & it has improved significantly since then.
