Amazing museum! Organized in terms of topic, for example costumes, jewelry, pottery, literature etc. Most signs and labels also have English translations, and are very clear and informative. The museum itself is also very nice, with open hallways and a garden in the centre. It's a good alternative to visiting the minorities village.

The nationalities museum has some excellent exhibits, the costumes, musical instruments and paintings are stunning. What doesn't work though is the narrative - the exhibits are episodic and its very hard to get a sense of how national group have developed. The musuem does have lots of exhibits in English - very impressive and they have a lovely and very friendly bookstore. This is a place for special interests only - even though its free..

Excellent museum showcasing items from the 26 minority groups in Yunnan. Detailed explanations in English make this a very rewarding experience. Located quite far from the core of Kunming, it can be reached by the A1 bus, which terminates at the museum at the south end of its route. Catch the same bus back. One central stop is beside the huge Walmart on Ren Min East Road. Four blocks east of Beijing Road.

Skip the fake minority park you have to go here. No entry and you can stay easily a half day there and learn about minorities in Yunnan. Even the museum shop has good stuff to buy. This museum is really a win, no entry and a lot to see and learn!

One of my favorite Kunming museums; have been several times over the past 8 or 10 years. Went again this morning and was distressed to find that quite a few of the best exhibits are now closed. One example was the hall of masks and another was the hall
that exhibited methods of non-written communications used in remote villages.

Still has some worthwhile things to see, especially if you are new to Yunnan. The ethnic costumes and woven fabrics are good. But I saw no sign of any improvements; found no new exhibits. It's as though this fine museum is now a step child and nobody at the top cares.

Hope someone comes along with a grant money to give them a big budget and breathes new life into the project. Hope that happens soon. The book shop still has a good selection (mostly in Chinese.)

It's easy to reach using public bus number A1. Just take it to the end of the line. The museum is located across from the Minorities Village 民族村 and it's not far from West Hills 西山。

Admission free. Closed Mondays.

Really interesting museum with fantastic exhibits on different textiles, artifices, writing etc and good English translations - highly recommended - worth combining this with a visit to the dragon gate mountain as they are in the same direction out of town, and buses to the mountain leave close to the museum.
