A business street with many stalls selling souvenirs and food. Night view will be better as all the lights are up. The area is big but easy to walk around as its in a square. Just walk around there during night time and you will see many stalls selling souvenirs, bars, food and also people singing song on a pop up stage along the way

I didn't find an English language review of this place, so I thought I would add one. I go there frequently, last time this past weekend. The main thing for a tourist to know is that this is a lively walking street, no car traffic allowed. It's a place you can safely stretch your legs after many hours on the airplane, and is also great for leisurely, low key "people watching."
It runs several blocks in between Dongfeng West Road 东风西路 and Jinbi Road 金碧路 near the center of downtown. It's a bustling commercial street with all sorts of shopping, from department stores like Carrefour to fine jewelry and boutique clothing stores. A fake Apple store is right around the corner.
Two movie theaters are located in shopping malls very close by. They are up on the seventh floor in both cases. Ask a policeman if you are looking for a cinema; the Chinese name is dianying yuan 电影院。The entire place is quite safe and well patrolled. But like in any big city, watch out for pickpockets.
Lots of restaurants including western fast food outlets, such as McDonald's and KFC. A good place for Chinese BBQ (shao kao 烧烤) is near the fountain, in front of Carrefour. The language barrier scarcely exists since you can point to what you want to eat and they will prepare it for you. If you don't want it spicy hot, you can say "Bu yao lajiao." 不要辣椒
It's a short stroll from here to the Gold Horse and Jade Rooster Memorial arches 金马碧鸡坊。A dozen or so blind masseurs in white medical gowns have set up folding chairs and can give you a good neck and shoulders massage. 20 minutes cost 20 Yuan. Establish the price before you start.
At night there are usually a few beggars who will approach asking alms. Some carry pitiful ragged babies and thrust them towards you to arouse pity. Some beggars rent or borrow babies for this specific purpose. Most locals won't engage them in conversation; don't say a word and just pretend they aren't there. If you give some money to one, you will soon be surrounded by many more that have suddenly appeared from nowhere.

I worked here for about a year, so it's hard to wax lyrical. It's basically a pedestrianized wide street with shops on either side and food stalls in the middle. It tends to be overpriced, but it's very convenient for finding what you want easily. There's a huge bookstore here I go to all the time. Unless you read Chinese you're best off not going in.
In spring and summer there are several tents where couples go to order wedding photos and hire elaborate gowns. There are usually models outside displaying both traditional Chinese and Western bridal gowns -- quite magnificent.
There are side streets off Nanping Jie with numerous restaurants including a small Muslim area with ethnic dishes. It's also very close to the Bird and Flower market (worth a stroll).
During festivals there is a big stage set up centrally for a variety of performances of mixed quality.
This is not really a tourist attraction; more like an outdoor Western mall. It's really packed with locals on weekends.
You won't find many people who speak English here, and if you are a foreigner the people hounding locals from shop fronts will leave you alone.

Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province, thus, Kunming, in a way, becomes to be the center where collect all the delicious foods from all around Yunnan Province. If you don’t get enough time to travel all around Yunnan, you can stay in Kunming for a couple of days to taste all the special local foods. In Kunming, the most important thing for visitors should be eating than shopping. So visitors may plan to take one day to shopping at Nanping Street. However, Nanping street is not only an area for shopping (shopping malls were built just two decades ago). For the locals, Nanping Street is a symbol of Kunming with Jinma & Biji Square, Dong’si temple, and Xi’si Street. All of this sightseeing become to the evidence of Kunming history. For people who living in Kunming, Nanping Street is a place to teach children about their hometown. What’s more, many delicious foods are here. Not only local special foods but also foods from other countries are becoming the place where is the epicures’ heaven.

This is a typical pedestrian shopping area, with many shops and malls selling international and local brands. There is a big Chinese bookstore, Carrefour, Uniqlo and many eateries. It is much smaller compared to those in Beijing and Shanghai.
Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to visit in the evening to feel the buzz and life in this city centre. Toilet facilities available.

Nanping Business Street was supposed to be a shopping destination, but the REAL action is on Zheng Yi street (which intersects Nanping). Zheng Yi is the Fifth Avenue or Michigan Avenue of Kunming, and the place to go for shopping.

Nothing special, there's street food, Mcdonald, KFC, Starbucks. A whole street for shopping, major brands like Uniqlo etc. Nothing much to buy but just to have a feel when you are near the area. Very touristy.

Nanping Business Street is a representative pedestrian street in Kunming. If you are a tourist, you go certainly pass by. The pedestrian zone begins near Dongfeng Square and ends near the subway station Wuyi Road. There are many flowers and artistic works on the street. It is very pleasant to take a walk.

In comparison to Shanghai and Beijing this street is a little tame. But it is still a central location to shop for branded goods.
It is interesting to observe the people along the street from beggars to blind masseurs. There are also tanks where you can feed the many fishes.

I noted in your review you lived here for a year. I'm thinking about going to Kumning(been to lots of places in China) in August/September since Air Asia flies there nonstop from Bangkok. I like shopping, authentic Chinese food, amusement parks, etc. Is there enough to do here? Is August or September an OK time to go? I usually stay at Marriott or holiday inn/intercontinentals where I have very preferred status. Thoughts? Thanks for your time!

I was in Kunming only for a week. That was a very short trip on my way to Hanoi. Frankly nothing much in Kunming . There are parks. Pagodas and temples. We went in November and the weather was about 17C. Not a word of English they speak unless you hire a tourist guide. I understand that the weather is about the same throughout the year. There are good restaurants.

Hi, can u arrange an air port pick up and drop off service? What is the price?
It is best to arrange the pickup and drop off with your hotel. I will give you, three other options.
a. Call +86 1388 - 8864-016 This is a taxi driver that drives me to the airport from Wyndham Grand Plaza Royale Colorful Yunan Kunming. Even though, this airport is relatively far, the charge is only 130 Yuan and it is inclusive of toll charges. This gentleman may or may not speak English.
b. Call Wyndham Grand Plaza Royale Colorful Yunan Kunming at +86 (0)871 6817 7777 Get them to transfer to the concierge and speak to Michael and he will help you. This gentleman speaks English
c. Take the taxi at the airport. It is safe, efficient and there should not be a communication problem as the drivers will know the destination. As a safeguard, print the letter head of your hotel and it is good enough.
Further can you arrange a taxi for us to visit important places in Kunming like green lake, golden temple, stone forest, western hills, ect? What is the price?
Stone Forest is about 45 minutes away from the center of and due to the vast expanse of the attraction, it is unlikely to be completed within 4 hrs and knowing that unless, you start at the crack of dawn, it will probably allocate 3/4 of a day.
Western Hill is another huge development that includes cable car and golf buggy and will also take 3/4 of a day.
My advice -
For the list you mentioned, allocate 2 days, as follows :-
Visit Stone Forest on day one and Western Hill on Day two. As these two places don't take a whole day, insert, your minor attraction, like green lake, golden temple.
Again, if you want a taxi, then either use the number as mentioned above or get in touch with Michael and he will help you out, even, if you don't stay at his hotel.
Pricing - The going rate for a 8 hr taxi hire is 600 Yuan. If you complete your attraction viewing, they will oblige to send you anywhere, up to the time allowed, but they are usually nice people and would not mind, if it exceeds, a bit and if the excess is more than an hour, a tip will make the day, a pleasant one..
I am sure you will enjoy your trip.
Cheers
