Stayed at the Hump, a foreigner friendly hostels just above the square.
Daytime, the place is so so , feels poor. Even fake.
But nighttime, once the lightnings are on, looks fabulous
I recommend sitting on the Hump terrace and enjoying the historical site

Not a must-see attractions, just a landmark of Kunming city, the joys are the night markets around it. During the night, many stands with commodities and handicrafts are there. It is also a square for many locals morning exercise, if you get up early aand get there round 7 o'clock, you can see the olds are doing exercise.

It was cool to look at because we stayed near it and walked by everyday. The construction and road barriers made it tricky to get to as we had to walk around quite a few things to get to it. Worth checking out if in the area.

As this is part of the shopping area, it's not too time consuming to pass by. The Yunan noodles shop overthere is good.

This landmark can be considered as the start of the main shopping street in Kunming. Good for photos, that's all. Main shopping street is also quite boring.

As suggested in the title, there is nothing special around the area apart from some touristy shops and restaurants. The old gates are nice and that's it....

I was at Guandu Ancient Town and decided to take a public bus to Jinma Biji. I asked around and was told a certain bus route went there. But the distance to the bus stop was ridiculously far. I walked for almost an hour to reach the bus stop and surprisingly, I could not find the bus no. at the bus signboard until I saw that particular bus stopped there and asked the driver who told me yes indeed the bus will alight at Jinma Biji. It would be advisable to plan your visit if you intend to take public bus in Kunming. Some bus route does not have the bus number on the bus stop signboard. The authority may wish to improve on this.

Jinma Biji has the two historical landmarks at the site and it was something like a symbol of Kunming. It is free entrance and other than these two old landmark archway structures, the neighborhood is a bustling shopping metropolis where you can explore and shop for one whole day. The whole area is just like the Orchard Road shopping belt in Singapore. You find skyscrapers of modern buildings, hotels, banks, eating alleys, shopping marts, all the modern stuffs of the current century are all in the shopping alleys accompanied by loud blasting music to attract sales.

The modernity attracted many young teenagers that patronised fast food stores, cosmetic outlets, stylish and trendy garment shops. Many also came here for a relaxed window shopping walk and you can walk and walk and the area is so huge and you can keep on walking at your leisure. My wife had seen enough of such shopping belts in Chengdu, Shanghai, Beijing and the many cities we visited. She just sat and relaxed at a corner of the Jinma Biji site and observed the madness of the many visitors, shoppers and pedestrians. The security at this area is also tightened up with police uniformed patrols and presence since the bombing incident at Kunming Train Station few years ago.

Overall, it gave me an impression of the real modernity of Kunming city with streets and streets of chain stores and trendy consumers' products.

Ancient city gate type arches. Good for a quick look. Easy to get to -- in the center of the city. Many bus lines come here. Just walk around for 15 or 20 minutes and snap some photos. A large variety of places to eat, as well as coffee houses.

When you finish here, you can cross the street (Jinbi Road 金碧路) to a walking street (no cars) where you can get an excellent chair massage from a professional blind masseur. 20 Yuan for 20 minutes. Great for tired neck and shoulders.

Europeans will be disappointed. Nothing is historic there. Another newly created "old town". A lot of shops they sell the same. Food is very bad there. it´s just another moneymaking theme park. You want to see some old buildings go to the old bird and flower market if you lucky they didn´t rip away the last few buildings. better go to Dali or Jianshui the old towns still there.

Nice place to take pictures. It is also the centre of town, especially at night where it is all lit up and lively. More interesting is a short walk (10 mins) through one of the gate and you come to the old quarter of town which is being renovated. Lots of cafes and restaurants and quaint shops. Well worth a visit during the day or at night (different atmosphere).
