The English title here is a little confusing, because this place is a park plus a zoo, both of which are built on a pretty mountain. Chinese name of Yuantong Zoo is Yuantong Dongwu Yuan 圆通动物园 and Yuantong Mountain is Yuangong Shan 圆通山. They are one and the same place.

The zoo itself is nothing special, and unless you are used to Chinese zoos it will look more like an animal prison. Conditions are not "modern" or especially humane. It has the usual assortment of birds and snakes and monkeys, plus some elephants and tigers.

The best two parts, in my opinion, are the butterfly house and the peacock preserve. Both are built so that you walk inside a large enclosure where you are with the animals and don't have barriers.

The mountain itself is a must see in early spring during Cherry Blossom time. In Kunming that is usually late February and early March. Right now, the gardens are not at their best.

Unfortunately, they also have quite a few revenue generating carnival type rides for kiddies. Plenty of snacks and souvenirs for sale.

If you want a better zoo experience, consider the Wild Animal Zoo 野生动物园 on the outskirts of the city to the northeast. It's less convenient and more expensive, but is more interesting by far.

Don't mixed this with Yuantong temple, these are two different places. This is actually a zoo with animals. Entrance fee is 15RMB. Went there in March and they have the Cherry Blossom festival, this place has a lot more Cherry trees compared to the Yuantong temple, so if you want to take nice pictures this is a better option

Another quiet temple not too far from Yunnan university. The entrance is very cheap. Paying a respect there.

This is a small basic park zoo and play area .Nothing special and nothing exciting. You can give it a miss unless you have nothing to do here.

The weather in Kunming is pretty good all year round, so why not get out and enjoy it here. Not the worst zoo you will see in China, but not too great either. The gardens are beautiful however, so worth a trip.

Animal zone is very stinky and animals are so poor, I prefer that flowers zone and amusement park is better.
