International Conference and Exhibition Center

The International Conference and Exhibition Center is in south central Kunming, not on the outskirts. It is off Chuncheng Road 春城路 fairly near the old (now closed) Wujiaba Airport. Official name is Kunming International Conference and Exhibition Center 昆明国际会展中心。Taxi drivers know it as Guomao 国贸 or Guomao Zhongxin 国贸中心 which means International Trade Center. This is a huge place and whether you enjoy it or not depends on what kind of Expo is in progress and whether the nature and subject of it appeal to you. It has 125,000 square meters of floor space, so wear comfortable shoes. Today I went with local friends and saw an excellent "wood show" featuring amazing wood carving and furniture craft. Large pieces were made from exotic hardwoods with intricate grains. Most were from China, but some were from Burma and Thailand. Some massive items were made from entire tree trunks, whereas others were made from polished roots and stumps. Large pieces predominated, and most were expensive. Looks to me like they were priced for corporate buyers. Saw several long tables suitable for the boardroom and others that could easily grace a conference room at a ritzy law firm. This wood show will last only two more days. Some smaller tea tables were outstanding. Two weeks ago a big gem and mineral show was the featured attraction. It also lasted about five days. Several weeks before that was a car show. Seems to me from asking around that something is always scheduled, but I couldn't swear to that. The center is served by various bus lines and costs about 20 Yuan for a taxi from city center. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find out what is going on there. Must be a Chinese language web site somewhere that I just have not yet managed to track down. This is frustrating, because I usually hear glowing reports of what was happening there a week or two ago and wish I had know ahead of time so I could have gone. Snack stands abound, plus an excellent Cantonese restaurant is inside the grounds. Name is Shun Feng 顺峰。Phone 0871-8380666. Looked like it was mainly being used for business entertaining. I suppose if you are here as a tourist and find yourself with a few extra hours on your hands, you could ask your hotel to give the center a call and ask what's on. Here's the phone number (below.) You might or might not be able to get an English speaker on the phone. Probably best to have someone from your hotel call for that reason. Tel :0871-7178999

Huge centre with so much to see and do. Good for driving or walking around. Maintained to a very high standard. Lots of summer colour. Many places to eat and extremely good food. Young children to seniors would enjoy the fresh air.
