Our family went not expecting much but were pleasantly surprised. An annual family pass is cheap and just the one off charges are very affordable. It is basically a stuffed animal museum but the children could spend hours there looking around and exploring. Exhibits are labeled in Chinese and English which is helpful. There is also a movie theatre on the top floor which plays a free movie every afternoon.

The museum is in the north of the city, in the grounds of the Kunming Zoology Institute. There isn't too much around it but the museum just about makes the journey worthwhile. There were many great specimens on display. Most of the exhibits were for animals local to Yunnan or the surrounding provinces and the museum may well be as close as you may get to many of the animals on display. The entry fee is 20元 per person, museum is open 09:00-17:00 and the museum justifies the price and will fill and hour or so of your time. The butterfly display was particularly good.I found many of the displays very dimly lit, almost dark. The museum has a very small gift shop that sells some catalogued insect specimens but nothing great.
