About
Hello, this is Jeff, I am a private professional English speaking tour guide with more than 10 years experience in Xi’an. I am still doing it, simply because that I just love this job. For most of the westerners who plan to visit China, it is very important to have a reliable guide because of the language barrier. As a local citizen of Xi’an city, I deeply love this city and the people, I will try my best to assist anyone who desire to discover the time-honored culture and authentic local people’s lifestyle during you visit Xi’an. You are welcome to contact me!

I feel i need to mention this up front. When hiring a private guide, we generally prefer to hire an individual with positive Tripadvisor feedback. In contrast to travel companies, this guarantees that you hire the person who has been reviewed.
Now, you need to realize that this is *not* a one man operation. I am just saying that looking at the Tripadvisor reviews, one might form this impression.

Now - I know how negative this might sound, and yes, we did not feel warm and fuzzy when we were picked up at the train station not by someone we had expected to see based on Tripadvisor pictures. HOWEVER - note my ultimate 5 star rating, and please read on.

Yes, every guide in this small outfit (it appears they have about half a dozen gents there) is named Jeff. They all are getting five star reviews; and our case was not an exception.

In the end "our" Jeff turned out to be the very competent, most caring, kind, hard-working guy imaginable. Our comfort and our traveling wishes were his highest priority in the two days together.

It is important to mention that this company was the only one that took up our - admittedly unusual - itinerary around Xi'an. Because some places we traveled to were obscure and off the beaten path, we had some adventures along the way. Jeff deserves absolutely the highest marks for perseverance, thinking on his feet, pushing through, and commitment to our success.

Highest marks.

My family and I used Jeff's services for a day tour of the Terrecota Warriors and the wall.He was very easy to work with while setting up the day via email. We were picked up promptly from our hotel at 8am to start our day. Jeff was professional, spoke great English, and was very knowledgeable. We were entertained during our entire hour drive to the warriors. He was flexible to our needs during the entire day and had some great suggestions for what to do after he left us. I would definitely recommend Jeff for a day in Xi'an.

My immediate family has engaged Jeff Zhang on three separate occasions (2011, 2013 and 2014) as a Tour Guide for Xi'An, China. Jeff is an outstanding tour guide; friendly and his English and Mandarin are excellent. He is meticulous with his planning, however is willing to adapt to different circumstances as they arise. His knowledge of Xi'An includes both historic and contemporary and he will prepare a detailed itinerary before hand based on your interests. Jeff’s knowledge also extends to the best places to eat local food. I have no hesitation in recommending Jeff as a Tour Guide for Xi'An.

We visited Xi'an on September 30 to October 2 and had two excellent tours with Jeff. Since we ended up visiting during the National holiday, Jeff had some great advice on how to maximize our 3 days in Xi'an and see the sights we wanted while avoiding the crowds. This was very helpful or we may not have seen everything we wanted.

On our first day, Jeff greeted us at the airport ready to take us directly to the Qin Terracotta Warriors. Even though our plane was over an hour late it was not a problem as Jeff was tracking the flights and knew exactly when we would arrive. We only had the afternoon, so the car was ready to go with water bottles and we headed off right away. The warriors were impressive and Jeff was a knowledgeable guide. After this we travelled to the Wild Goose Pagoda and then to the Tang Dynasty Dinner Show. The entire time Jeff made sure tickets were organized and our luggage was secure. It was not until after 10pm when we finally got to our hotel and Jeff stayed until we had checked in.

October 1 is the first day of China's National Holiday. Jeff recommended we do not tour that day due to the crowds, but gave us a recommended walking tour route from our hotel to see all the major sights inside the walled city: Drum Tower, Bell Tower, Muslim Market and city walls. It was a great day and we even rode tandem bicycles around the 14 km of the Xi'an City Wall: this was one of the highlights of our trip!

We flew out on October 2 so Jeff picked us up at our hotel with our luggage and took us to see the Tomb of Emperor Jingdi (Hanyangling) which is close to the airport. This was very a very impressive museum and actually quite a calm and uncrowded considering it was National Holiday week. After this Jeff took us right to the airport and did not leave us until we were completely checked-in and in the boarding line-up.

If you want a tour guide who is organized and thinks of the details before you arrive we would recommend Jeff. Take the time to correspond with him before you arrive and he will make sure that your visit is well planned. We would recommend using Jeff.

We hired Jeff in May of 2012 to take us around Xian. Our train was 2 hours late but he was at the train station waiting for us. He was very knowledgeable about the history and the sights around the area. We went to see not only the Terracotta Warriors sight but another burial sight as well. He arranged for us to go to the Chinese Opera show with dim sum and the water show in the park both of which were fabulous. On the days we did not use him, he made sure we knew how to get around the city. I have had other guides since then but none as good as Jeff. He was concerned for our experience as well as our safety. He also took us places to eat that were great but not the normal tourist fare. I highly recommend Jeff!!!

Jeff met our family of 6 at Xian station. He had been recommended by our guide in Beijing. We discussed what we wanted to do with our day in Xian then left it to Jeff. We had a fantastic time going to the Terracotta Warriors, visiting the Wild Goose pagoda then riding on bikes around the old city wall. Jeff was very knowledgable, spoke fluent English and was flexible to accommodate our interests. I would recommend him without hesitation.

A couple of years ago while traveling in China for a month, we booked a tour of the Xi'an area with Jeff from reviews found on TA. He met us at the train station from Beijing with driver and van promptly. Jeff is a very nice young man who speaks English well, is very informative about the many sites we visited and he took especially good care of each and every one of us (5 women). He was a true gentleman and I highly recommend his services to anyone wishing to see and do lots in Xi’an in 2 short days. Below is an exerpt from our trip report to show you the extent Jeff goes to ensure our trip was a fabulous one:
Since our itinerary was an ambitious one, Jeff suggested that we take breakfast on the go, which we agreed to do. We were then off to see the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shi Huang the First Emperor of China – said by many to be the 8th wonder of the world! We stopped at one factory on the way to see how the terracotta and porcelain pieces are made. We made some very modest purchase here as well. Upon reaching the site of the warriors, we were very impressed with the modern facilities that enclose the warriors. As a matter of fact, the entire facility is very modern and very large. First thing I asked Jeff to see if the only surviving farmer who discovered the warriors was in the book store signing books – something I read about on TA. They were discovered in 1974 by some local farmers drilling a water well. What great luck, he was! We immediately went and bought our books and had him sign them. He even shook my hand!!!
Next Jeff took us to a “theater in the round” and viewed a short film about the warriors. We then entered the pits and spent more than a few hours marveling at them all. Jeff, of course, went into great detail about the exhibit. The army is a form of funerary art buried with the First Emperor of Qin whose purpose was to help rule another empire in the afterlife. Legend also has it that the warriors were real soldiers, buried with the emperor so that they could defend him from any dangers in the next life. Whatever the reason, they are a true wonder.

After the pits, we walked back to the van, stopping along the way to shop at the many stalls there. Jeff then escorted us to a dining hall restaurant where we had a quick lunch and purchased a bottle of the local pomegranate wine. The"wine" turned out to be more like brandy or cognac and was delicious! We then checked into our hotel, The Bell Tower. We had good-sized rooms which faced the Bell and Drum Towers. After freshening up a bit and a short rest, Jeff met us and took us to Muslim Street (a delightful area filled with shops, stalls and great smelling foods). We had tickets to the Tang Dynasty dumpling dinner and show so we did not purchase any street food but saved our appetite for the Tang.
Jeff accompanied us to the theater and made sure we were satisfied with our seats and table (which we were). He then told us to meet him after the show by the front door (what good care he gave to us the entire time). Dinner was quite good (although we were to have even better ones in Shanghai later on) and the show was great! Jeff escorted us home directly after.

The next day, after a very good breakfast buffet at the hotel, we met Jeff and went to the old city wall. We rented bicycles and proceeded to ride completely around the city. What a grand time we had too. Along the way we waved and greeted many people, took lots of pictures and just enjoyed the morning. After we went to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and spent quite a while there. It was the most beautiful and peaceful Buddhist monastery that we visited while in China. Jeff, again proved to be quite the historian and story teller. We took many pictures here and of the mall in the very front. For lunch Jeff brought us to a Buddhist vegetarian restaurant. Here we were given a private dinning room and we had a continuous flow of food brought in for nearly an hour. Although vegetarian, the tofu looked, smelled and tasted like different meats; chix, beef, etc. It was very, very good. The restaurant is Tian Long Bao Yan and it located in Yan Da Xi Lu. The bill came and we were all surprised how inexpensive our veggie lunch actually was.
After lunch we had a little bit of time to return to the Muslim Street for some shopping, after which Jeff and driver took us to the airport for our flight to Guilin. Not only did they drive us there but Jeff escorted us into the airport and waited until we passed through security before leaving us. He truly is a good find and I recommend his services to all looking for an excellent guide with a great personality and wonderful suggestions of what to see/do in Xi'an.

We visited Xi'an a few years ago and had Jeff as our tour guide. Our group included 2 families with 6 children total. Jeff spoke fluent English and was great with our kids. He knows the history of Xi'an very well and can explain the importance of all the sights in the area. Jeff was also very efficient with logistics arranging our cars and many meals in and around Xi'an. We have very fond memories of our visit which was made special because of our tour guide, Jeff. I happily recommend him to any visitors to Xi'an and would certainly use him again if we were there again.
