I did a custom Private tour with my guide Lisa. It was great. Lisa spoke great english and her knowledge of the area in Xian was great.
The sights were fabulous and the Dumpling banquet with show at the end of the night was a great way to finish my time in Xian. Well worth the money for a lone traveller and anybody who can't speak mandarin!

I did a day trip from Beijing to see the Terracotta warriors in all their glory. Mary, my English speaking guide who works with Liu at XianTourBooking, was incredible and helped make my experience so much better and more memorable. From the time she picked me up at the airport to when I was dropped back off, I felt safe and cared for the entire way. As for the tour, I thought I knew a lot about the warriors' history only to find Mary providing so much more and with such passion and reverence. She also taught me a lot about the Chinese culture and customs. Even though others have already written about the great communication from this tour group, I still want everyone to know how easy and fear-relieving each email was - starting with the very first detailing itineraries, options and costs to the last double checking my flight times. My only concern originally was that you pay in cash after the tour, since as a Westerner I’m not use to that and it’s a little unnerving, but it’s part of the Chinese culture and just how they do business. I found the same to be true throughout China during my trip. If you are going to Xi’an and want an exceptional and trust-worthy guide, I can think of none better than the XianTourBooking company.

The terracotta warriors are definitely worth the one hour drive from Xian city. But you need to be aware of a few potential tourist traps before you go. Many locals try to sell you car parking outside of the museum area. The general parking for visitors near the ticket office is a long long way from the entrance to the exhibits. If it's raining or you have any mobility issues, you need to plan your visit more carefully. Invest in a reputable guide that will organise entry tickets for you ahead of time and allow entry beyond the ticketing office so that you can have reasonable access to the exhibit areas. You won't be disappointed. This is truly a world class exhibition, the sheer size and scale of the exhibits are breathtaking - enjoy! Also be aware that it is also well worth including a trip to walk the walls of the walled city of Xian. Some people just visit Xian for the Warriors visit and then leave immediately after. Make the time to walk the walls - you won't be disappointed - it's an unexpected pleasure - truly magnificent.

Mr Ding was very helpful and recommended many places for us which were really of excellent standard. He also entertained us with many stories of ancient China. He was witty and had excellent humour. Highly recommended.

it makes things easier to go around in a group since some destinations are far from the city and you get more knowledge from the guides.

We found great reviews for DingYi on Trip Advisor. We contacted him and had an immediate reply. His English was good and we were confident with our plans for Xian with him as our driver. We would certainly recommend his services.
Our Xi'an tour started when Dingyi picked us up early in the morning and took us on a great tour, firstly to the Tomb of Emperor Jingdi, Hanyangling Museum, then on to the Banpo Neolithic Village Museum. In the afternoon he took us to the Terracotta Warriors Museum.
We were happy to walk around the museum, as DingYi had already given us a lot of the history on the way, but he would have arranged for a tour guide.
The Warriors were in three pits and we also saw the Exhibition halls. It was an incredible
sight and was worth all the effort getting to Xi'an. It's a vast site and can take hours to view it all.
It was an amazing experience and all the better for having DingYi as our driver. He
also arranged for transfers to and from the airport.

We avoided our hotel's recommended coach tour which was more than double per person what we paid for BOTH of us to have a private driver and guide for the day.
I definitely recommend Xi'an Western International Travel Service.
We had a lovely, helpful driver and Sabrina, a wonderful English speaking and very knowledgeable guide for 8 hours.
When the rain dissuaded us from viewing more outside sights, she found us a lovely and very cheap local restaurant for lunch and then on demand, took us somewhere we could shop.
They even arranged a car for us, to take us to the train station, on the day we left. Could not have been more friendly or helpful.

We left our hotel and decided to use public transport to get to the warriors and to really get amongst the locals. From the Bell tower Hotel you take a 201 bus to Xian station then a 306 to the terracotta warriors. You can also get a 614 or 615 which we did on the way out but they really go around the houses picking up workers and delivering them to locations. On our return we took the 306 which was direct to the station non stop.
If you sit at the front of the bus it is a real white knuckle ride and you find yourself chanting the mantra "The driver does not want to die!" We finally arrived at 7.30 am and from then on it was chaotic we arrived early to beat the crowds. There were very few signs in English or other languages and when they were there they were a little lost in translation. We managed to get our tickets without to much fuss.
One Chinese tour operator who saw our occasional frustration told us "no much time for foreign tourist far to many Chinese", So either go with a tour group or have fun on your own.
Building Number 1 is the main shed/Pit. It is huge and quite spectacular. As you walk around you can see the Archaeologists still working on the exhibits. Many of the pieces are still dismantled or broken and being catalogued for repair. Pits 2-3 are also very interesting with some historic photos and displays.
There are plenty of toilets and all were very clean and modern with European styles as well for those who are unable to squat down. Security is also very good so you have peace of mind. Actually, we found the security all over China excellent.
When you come out the vendor prices for souvenirs are quite silly. We always started about 50-60% less than they asked and the fun begins. If you are getting nowhere just walk away and they call you back and you get a good deal. We bought 5 Xian men pieces starting at 120 Yuan and got them in a box for 20 Yuan.
Tips.
See pit 1 first if you are early and want good pictures 10-10.30 it's packed as the masses of tour busses arrive and you will be fighting for positions..
Bring plenty of water it is expensive to buy unless you not bothered.
Wear good walking shoes as the site is massive and you feet will ache.
We also took the shuttle bus to the emperors mausoleum which is just a statue on a mound of grass but quite nice. You can hire an 8 seat golf cart to get there and for a ride around the park, other wise you do a lot of walking as the complex is massive.
On the way back to the busses we stopped at Burger king for a snack in the complex and became a subject to be gazed at. It was a fantastic day and many of the Chinese tourists asked use to have a photo with them, it was all part of a great day. An amazing site to see that close up, we were there for 5 hours and the time just shot by.

Seek out Mary if at all possible. She is at the train station and will approach you if you need a tour guide. Random I know but she is one of the best and reasonable rates.
She has a car and if you have little time she will assist you to cover as much ground in one day as possible.

Hi. Can anyone suggest a tour company for a one-day guided & assisted tour of the terracotta army?

I don't know if you've already made your trip but a great place to start on TA would be " Xi'an driver & guide (Mary) " She has a car, speaks English, and has very reasonable prices. If you have problems finding her, her direct number is 86 187 068488. I hope this helps

Hi,
In light of the good reviews you received I decided to contact you.
My husband and I are going to visit Xian on June 5st, 2015. We are interested in a tour guide which will take us to the Museum of Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses and to several sites the city has to offer. We would like the offer to include all tickets, transportation (also from and to the Hotel) and the track of the tour.
Best regardes,
Liat.
