- PaulJSan Diego, California151 contributionsTour this phenomenal achievement! The Xi'an City Wall is a phenomenal achievement surpassing what seems possible during any time period. If you want to see the entire wall, consider renting a bicycle on the top of the wall. Many couples dress up in elaborate period dress and take wedding pictures on the top of the wall making it an even nicer treat.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 15, 2023
- thetravellingfugu190 contributionsWonderful city wall, best way to see it all is by cyclingThe best way to explore is by renting a bike and cycling along the wall. Enter through the South gate and walk along the south side and you will see the bike rental service. The entire wall is about 13km, however you can return your bike at any stop along the west, north and east perimeters. The southern perimeter is a no-cycling zone. Great views all around and little incline, making it easy to walk or cycle.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 4, 2023

At level 2 of the city wall, there's a centerpiece of the entire area and a staff comes by at designated times to give a brief of it. Lucky to catch the 4pm one and got a better understanding of how the city wall came to be and possibly the origin of the term '买东西' , stemming from the only 2 markets at that time 东市 (local market)& 西市 (international one where they traded with 西域). The entire wall is 6km long but I've clocked enough steps for the day, so I walked for just a stretch along the city wall, entering from 永宁门 and exited thru 文昌门.Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten November 18, 2023
- David B56 contributionsGreat way to see the old city and fill in a few leisurely hours.A wonderfully restored 16.4km (I think) city wall surrounding Xi'an old town. My family and I hires bikes and cycled the full route of the wall. Plenty of places to rest out of the sun, places to grab a drink of you forget/dont bring some with you, but the usual souvenir are dotted around the place especially near the south gate. Well worth a look onto, and some of the gardens on the outside of the wall, particularly towards the east side, are lovely to walk through.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 4, 2024
- s t3 contributionsHow to get an entrance ticket in-person when you cannot use its local appWhen I arrived at the South Gate, there was little English spoken at the customer service desk and I was told to use the booking app to buy the entrance ticket. It didn't work for me as it required a local phone number that can receive an SMS code. I gave up that I would walk the ancient walls. Next day I was visiting the Stele Forest or Beilin Museum (10 RMB) nearby even though the exhibitions were closed and discovered a much smaller entrance to the city wall. To my surprise, there was a staff ready to help and I bought my ticket in person without having to use the booking app. It was a lovely walk during the day as I didn't have the time to buy ticket before 6 pm to see the wall lit up at night. Entrance was $58. There are vendors there selling food and souvenirs. You can also rent a bike to ride on the wall. It was impressive to see the wall and gates built to protect the city from so long ago.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 25, 2024

- Martin ASuzhou, China3,212 contributionsAwesome Historic And Modern AdventureThere is a double wall, re-constructed, and the first wall has a hotel inside. The gate in the walls leads to a long street lined with vendors, starting with a good little art gallery. Further down, the street is lined with restaurants. A cross street has a great little night market with great street food. Between the two gates, there's a bar, as well as some small restaurants. Inside the walls there's an ancient city and the main street is very busy but not over-crowded. We went there three days in a row as there is a lot to see. The palace and pagoda aren't far away -- a good walk or a short didi ride. The square by the palace is a popular place for locals at night. Hundreds of women dress up in the style of a thousand years ago and pose for photographers.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 22, 2024

The historical part of Xi’an is surrounded by a city wall, like the one in “Mulan movie”. For 54 yuan (in 2021) you can come up to the wall and take a walk or rent a bike to ride along the wall. The bike is 45 yuan plus 100 yuan for deposit for 1 person, for 1 day. You can rent and leave your vehicle on each station next to wall exit/entrance (fatally there are 4 exits). The wall is around 13km, so it will take you around 3-4 hours to walk around it. On the wall you can find small shops with souvenirs and snacks, along with tourists office and toilets. A great place to enjoy the city view, especially at night time

The old city of Xi'an was surrounded by a stone wall which has been rebuilt to its former glory. There is a wide walkway that you can ascend to and walk completely around the old city. If you prefer you can rent bicycles (one or two person) and take a fun ride around the wall for great views of the larger city. There are vendors on the wall for drinks and snacks. If you happen to be there during the Chinese New Year, the wall has been decorated with many beautiful blowup characters - dragons, people animals etc. Great for picture taking!

We visited the City Wall on a tour in August 2019. The wall is a large fortress-like wall that surrounds the city. You need to climb some stairs to get up onto the wall, but once on the wall, it's like taking a stroll around the City. The entire area is paved, and has small buildings and lookout points along the way. It was a nice way to see the city from a distance. There are bicycles for people to ride, and you can walk the entire wall, or just a portion of it before turning around and heading back to the entrance. Worth taking a look, but not a lot to do there other than walk.

Cycling on top of this wall was a really unique experience. Being at eye level with real family homes was extremely interesting (don't worry, staring/privacy don't seem to be cultural concerns in China). It really felt like a window into the past, so be sure to rent a bike and get started.

This isn't an attraction for everyone. Its not exciting for most, but my wife and I loved it. So did the friends we went with, but you have to be willing to read the text panels to better understand about the walls, construction and what its about. We enjoyed learning about it and also meeting people. We entered on the south gate and the is where most of the reconstruction has been and shops. (I don't know if you can enter from other sides, but if you can, don't. Go to the south gate)
We also rode bikes around the 14 km walls, and got to see a big overview of the city, inside and out. My guess is most kids will tire of it quickly and many adults will too, but if you like history and you like a good view, a long walk or a bike ride this might be perfect for you.
2-3 hours if you ride bikes around the walls. They done adjust seats so it wasn't a comfortable ride for us, but we are bikers with our own bikes but some might not notice or care.
45-1.5 hours if you want to poke around and explore the south wall only.
I think it was the West Wall Gate the had also some models of old time weaponry that would have been used and that was cool.

The walls are over 600 years old and are just over 8 miles long.
The South Gate is the most impressive. Most visitors get on to the walls from here.
There are two museums inside the barbican and the archery tower of the South Gate which are open to the public.
You can hire bikes from the south gate and cycle round the walls. There’s plenty of room for cyclists and pedestrians.

Probably my favourite part of being in Xi'an! Hire a bike and cycle around the city wall, stopping for photos and to enjoy the view. It let's you see some of the less touristy places, and shows the beauty and intricate designs of the roof tops - offering a different view from the normal street level! If you can, I suggest going all the way around- getting off and on another bike for the section you can't cycle. The people in the cycle hire stations aren't overly polite, but don't let that put you off - a bike is well worth it. Keep your deposit receipt safe and they refund you at the end.

This was way bigger than I expected. Entrance ticket 54 yuan and on the top you can rent a bike. Cost 45 yuan and 100 yuan guarantee deposit that is returned after you return the bike. It is worth it to rent a bike cause the entire wall is actually kind of a square/rectangle and it's 13,74km long. In normal speed on that uneven ground it may take you over an hour to finish the lap even with some stops on the way to make photos/selfies. I enjoyed the ride and the stay on the wall, too. There are some really nice scenic spots or places to take photos of some historical buildings. By the way, who comes in couples, you may borrow a bike for couples. It think the price is 80 yuan. If you visit Xi'an, I think the City Wall is a must see.

Is it possible to rent bike helmets to ride around the wall in Xian?
Written September 5, 2018
We rode the wall and didn't see any helmets available! The ride is very easy and you would have to be very unlucky to have an accident!
Written September 5, 2018
Hi, can you use the admission ticket to enter/access the city wall multiple times during one day, or only once?
Written May 9, 2018
Once you leave you cannot renter. It’s very inexpensive to get in around 8 US dollars. I would recommend renting the bikes it’s a lot of fun and you can ride at your own pace. Stopping and viewing the city it’s beautiful.
Written May 9, 2018
Is it open for tourists during night time?
Written April 3, 2018
Open all the time! You now have to pay to go there. Not expensive like 10 US dollars. You can even rent bike to ride around. It is about 15 km around. Very nice!
Written April 3, 2018
Is it possible to visit it in the evening? And ia the view good if you visit it at night time?
Written April 2, 2018
I believe that only the South Gate is open at night. To the south of the South Gate there is a show on in the night, which could be nice to look at from the wall. I'm not sure what times it is on, but it involves some marching and music etc.
Written April 2, 2018
Hi, are there any officially endorsed/ recommended bike rental places? Do the places offer helmet hire as well? Also, if we plan to go in the late afternoon, what is the latest time we can go on the wall? Thank you.
Written January 20, 2018
Agree with John P. Bike rentals are right where you come up the stairs. I think all the bike rental places on the wall are all the same company. You can rent from one and drop off at another. I did have to trade bikes at a different location because I had a bad bike. I rented at close to 6pm and finished after sunset at 7pm. Have fun.

Hi. We plan to go to visit Xian City for the terracota warriors and the city itself. Coming from Beijing and going back, which is the best mode of transportation to take? Are there flights available or trains or bus? Would appreciate any feedback or recommendation. Best if you can include info like how long the trip will be, how much more or less is the fare price, etc.
Thank you in advance :)

Hi, we took the bullet train from Beijing to Xi'an with a first class ticket. Cost was 825RMB each as we booked through Travel China prior to arriving in China. It took us 5 hours travel time total and was a very comfortable and hassle free trip compared to air travel.
Written September 15, 2017
Sorry for being late. We arrived in the morning and it was open at 9:30
You need at least 2 to 4 hour to visit all the site.
There is a lot of hotel inside the visiting area. But for the closing time I can't help you.
Enjoy
