We arrived in Xi'an on the bullet train from Wuhan and were promptly and courteously greeted by Rocky. From beginning to end Rocky was helpful, informative and friendly. His English was good, not great, but he made that work to his advantage as we enjoyed teaching each other.

We had arranged an itinerary online with a China Highlights travel consultant and we stayed pretty close to that plan, but Rocky helped us make adjustments as needed. We were a party of 3 - my wife, our adult son. He was particularly adept at knowing when to be with the three of us and when to let us spend time without him. Our driver, Mr Li, was also a big plus - friendly and reliable.

The decision to hire a guide was a matter of some debate, adding a lot of cost to an already expensive trip. But as we left Xi'an we agreed that the benefits of working with China Highlights more than justified the cost.

our guide Jim met us at the train station and firstly took us for breakfast near the station, and told us about the day.. Jim speaks great English and is so knowledgeable, about china constantly giving us information, facts and figures, his knowledge of the Terra- cotter warriors is fantastic, afterwards he took us for a really great meal at an authentic family run restaurant, then back to xi'an to ride around the old city wall on push bikes.. if you need a guide then JIM DANG is your man..

If you get the opportunity to do a night tour of Xi’an it is well worth it. The people and city come alive. Open air concerts, markets, and people enjoying life. But it is the lanterns and lights that make this experience magical

So much history and things to see in Xi'an, you can't do it justice without a professional guide. We booked our 3 city tour of China with China Highlights. We had two guides in Xi'an, Jenny for the first 1 1/2 days and Maureen for the second 1 1/2 days. Both guides were friendly and knowledgeable and took care of everything! There is no better way to travel in a foreign country than to show up in the lobby of your hotel, be met by a guide and driver and not have to worry about directions, parking, tickets or meals! Each day was varied from the Terra-cotta warriors, biking the city walls and exploring the muslim quarter and mosque. We were very pleased with China Highlights and our guides!!

We had a wonderful time exploring Xi'an with Olivia Liu, our China Highlights Xi'an tour guide. We visited the awe-inspiring Terracotta Warriors and Horses and Shaanxi History Museum which houses many beautiful and fascinating relics. I appreciate that she explained each site and pointed out the most interesting relics prior to entering the often crowded & noisy museums. We learned to cook dumplings with a lovely local family and leisurely biked along the Xian City Wall. At the Muslim Quarters, she had us try one of her favorite snacks the persimmon rice cake with walnut filling which was delectable! Olivia is an exemplary guide who took very good care of us. We needed cash and she helped us convert currency at the bank. We also had an excellent driver who was a gentleman. Request both of them and you will not regret it.

Too little time in Xi'an was okay thanks to this "double" highlights full day tour. No-one else booked so I could choose to cancel, change or pay + ¥200 for a private guide & nice car & driver - easy choice! Rosa was my guide - very good English & knowledge with lots of detail to fill in my prior knowledge. Without being able to see these two digs I would have left Xi'an disappointed, but I left very happy.

Our visit to Xian was fantastic. Xian is full of history and we learned a great deal and had a great time due to our guide Olivia. She is very knowledgeable and professional. She told us about the history of the terra cotta warriors as well as pointed out the best viewing points for them, even pointing out the intricate artwork that we would have otherwise missed. She did the same at the Shaanxi museum. There were so many art pieces and it was extremely crowded. So before going in she showed us the highlighted pieces using an art book as well as gave us the history of these pieces, making the experience in the museum that much better. She also rearranged our schedule for riding bikes on the city wall because of the rain to ensure we would have a good time. She's great. Ask for her.

From being met at the airport across all the sights Jim, ably assisted by his driver, made my two days in Xi'an a memorable trip. Jim's knowledge and passion for his home city was outstanding and brought to life the rich and wide history of Xi'an.

Apart from the obvious highlight of the Terracotta Army, the ancient city walls and Giant Wild Goose Pagoda were also highlights. If you want to try the local food, Jim also had some great recommendations.

Overall a great 2 days.

We had a great time, private tour guide and private driver, awesome newer van (with bottled water). The company made suggestions and custom tailored the timetable to exactly what I wanted to see. We spent as much or as little time at each place as we wanted to. No jade selling, no other tricks, this company is the best.

Highly recommend.

What can I say that hasn't already been said? Jim (Dang) is simply the best guide! My friend and I were anxious travelling alone in China. We needn't have worried. Jim met us at the train station at the beginning of our stay and dropped us at the airport (making sure we were at the right gate and through security before he left) at the end...in between he guided us around Xi'an explaining, not only the site but the area, the history, the story! As I said - simply the best. Everyday we ate at the best noodle shop (not the tourist traps but where the local eat), the best dumpling place, with a local family etc.
It was not only these types of things that made Jim stand out as a guide (and we did have a few during our trip), it was the other thoughtful things he did. He made sure we knew how to get to certain breakfast places in the morning without getting lost, he organised a dinner theatre night with no warning, he phoned ahead and made sure our next guide would be meeting us at the other end of the plane trip and he made us feel like a friend. We could ask him anything.
If you are visiting Xi'an and Jim is already booked, I recommend that you modify your itinerary. He is worth waiting for.
It has been nearly two months since I was in China and Jim is still sending me emails and photos (and no I'm not a young lady - my friend and I are both over 50!).
How's that for a recommendation!
Simply the best.
Hint: Ask Jim to organise/suggest the best places for you to shop for anything - he knows everybody!
Our China trip was made so special by the wonderful guides we had. The personal touch is definitely the way to go.
