We went to this event as an optional excursion on our Gate 1 trip to China. The show itself was good - I was amazed at the costumes, dancing, hairstyles, and variety of musical instruments. The woman who did the English introductions was difficult to understand, but a description in English had been provided, and English announcements over the PA system were good. Our group had dinner prior to the show and found it to be mediocre. There were about 6 courses, of not much food in each, and we were very rushed to eat it before they whisked our plates away. Most of the food was unexceptional. Unlimited drinks were provided, but the wine was terrible so we were reduced to beer, soft drinks or water. I noticed on the way in that apparently tickets to the show were still being sold for 110 yuan (about $17). We each paid $65, which means the meal cost $48 and that is WAY overpriced for what was served. See if you can go to the show and eat dinner somewhere else first.

The name of this dinner show is the Tang Dynasty Palace Music and Dances performed at the Shaanxi Grand Opera House Xi'an. It is located a few blocks south of the Southern Gate of the city wall. This should not be confused with another popular dinner show in Xi'an show called the Tang Dynasty Dinner Show.
My wife and I very much enjoyed the show. We only got show tickets so I can't comment on the dinner food. The theatre was set up with tables set up everywhere (there weren't any theatre-style seats). Most of the crowd were Chinese so I felt comfortable that the show wasn't a tacky foreigner's tourist trap.
The show itself was a little over an hour that had 10 parts. Each part featured dancers, musicians, or at times, both. The sets and costumes were brightly colored and very beautiful. The songs and dances seemed to be authentic traditional Chinese and were entertaining. All patrons received a free show program that explained (in Chinese and English) each of the 10 performances. Also, pictures and videos are allowed.
As a musician myself, I particularly enjoyed the highly skilled panpipe soloist, the absolutely amazing "trumpet" soloist (he also had some sort of whistle/mouthpiece), and the percussion group.
Keep in mind that this is NOT an acrobatic show, it's a performance to showcase the music and dance of the Tang Dynasty. I don't know if it was authentic to the Tang Dynasty, but it was a very visually and musically appealing show - the kind you hear about and want to see when in China. I highly recommend it!

While in Xi'an, you just have to see the beautiful performance at the Opera House. The dancing of long tradition, costumes, music and dinner (served just before the show) are worth every small penny for a ticket. There is a gentleman playing a type of mouth organ that mesmerizes the audience with his range - he turns a bird song into a beautiful ballad. Another performance was the playing of a small horn with the performer intermittently talking like he'd turned himself into a cartoon character - hard to describe. The performance includes the "Masked Warriors," "Feather Dress Dance," and we couldn't take our eyes off the stage until the final curtain was pulled. Be sure to videotape because we have watched it twice since returning home.

This is not the original Tang Dynasty dance. It's a much cheaper dance show but hotels charge you the same fees. Do not pay the standard 220 yen for show ticket or 550 dinner with show.
The REAL Tang Dynasty palace dynasty dance theatre is on Chang 'an road.

Choose carefully! There are a least four Tang Dynasty show in Xi'an and around. This one is definitely not the best: The packed seating around tables don't facilitate the view for ladies and children. The loud hall is super packed with groups of tourists in shorts and handphones. Forget the etiquette, despite the name, it has nothing to do with Opera.
The scenes are purely visual with basic choreography and no story line. The visual effect is nice, but boring in the long run. No singers and several musical playbacks to accompany the tired musicians and westernized cocktail tunes .
We skipped the dumplings as the price was ridiculous: 135¥ is up to 10 times a generous plate of good dumplings downtown. As we didn't participate to the dumpling party, we arrived after the food and got the remaining seats with a poor view.

The food was mediocre at best but the performance was pretty good if you have never seen something like it before. But the bus loads of noisy foreign tourists made it seem more like a visiting Chinese show in the US rather than the feel of a local performance
This is in sharp contrast to the performance we saw in Chengdu where most of the attendees were local Chinese families ... kids, grandparents etc. ...and made it much more enjoyable. I suggest passing on the Xian Opera House.

This attraction gets very good reviews. I consider it must be separated into two parts - the food and the show. In terms of the food - very average. The review of the food by Kyokokinura accords with my view. If I was a reviewing the food only I would give this 1 star. However the show is good quality. Colourful, skilful and interesting. I am not sure how valuable it is in terms of understanding Chinese history. Would I recommend this? Certainly not for the food (and it is possible to take a 'no food' show). The show is good - but not a 'must not miss'.

Created for tourists - but I did not mind !!!!
First you enjoy an incredible dumplings dinner (specialty of Xi'an) for about 1.5 hour, later to be followed by a quality performance of dance and music from the Tang Dynasty Palace. Very nice place, usually full of tourist groups (some of them dressed in t-shirts, some wearing an evening attire).
The evening is relaxing, very good food and really quality show. Try it; you will not regret it !.

My tour guide recommended this Tang Dynasty Show as being the most traditional so we got tickets here. It clocked in at just over an hour. We skipped the dinner but there were plenty of cheap refreshments like popcorn and ice cream to snack on. Nice performance with spectacular costumes and traditional instruments.

was a part of our full-day sightseeing program. Although it was a typical tourist trap, 120 RMB for Dumpling eating at dinner and 220 RMB for the show, it was quite OK. At least we have seen an 1hr and 10 min. Opera dance show, which was really not too bad. It was our first time to Xi'An as a tourist and the next time we think we would not go there again. However, if you are here already then just grab the opportunity to visit this show. If you can go by your own and cancel the Dumpling part, so the price of 220 RMB is quite reasonable. Frankly, the Dumpling is really nothing special, you can get it at any local restaurant much more delicious and cheaper.
