I thought I had reviewed this wonderful project but perhaps not on TA. Anyway it is the most authentic historic Chinese architectual location I visited. Mercifully no crowds. Done with utmost care and attention to detail. Homes and work places of more simple folk, well more simple than Emperors. We were guided through part of the some 40 acres of village where the buildings from different parts of China and from different periods were saved from the bulldozers and transported stone by stone to this location and reconstructed. Actually a task completely underestimated when one strolls along the roads between the buildings. It hard to believe they were not always where they now stand. This project deserves support.

This is a rather large museum, where the owner displays the old buildings and art/culture items from the local area - GuanZhong, which means the middle part of ShanXi Province. He went around the countryside, collects the entire home estate - entire buildings, and re-assembles them in this village/museum. They are just beautiful - you walk in and out of many old buildings, each with a long history. This place is similar to the Greenfield Village in Michigan, where Henry Ford set up some 100 years ago, with his collections of Edison's lab, Wester's home, and Cotswold Cottage from UK. At the entrance is the terminal of a bus (#501, I think), which goes into the center of the Xi'An city. You want to visit this place when the weather is good; you will want to be fit to walk around. There is a restaurant inside by the entrance - the local food was very good. The ticket costs ¥120 (US$20), not cheap.
(Do not confuse this excellent museum with some other smaller ones around this ancient city. The Chinese name and address of this place are:

The museum was small but had a well arranged selection of exhibits. But the highlight was a calligraphy lesson and the opportunity to buy works by students of the School of Art. Our museum guide was very good and as a result we have a new appreciation for Chinese calligraphy and art.

Yes, I liked this museum more than the Terra Cotta Warrior Museum. For one the place isn’t crowded because it’s a distance from the city center. Two, it isn’t very cheap to enter but that means for sure there won’t be that many people. There is a fantastic stage performance that is so enjoyable. The place is large and clean and very picturesque. It also has a place in the back where they teach you folk art so it’s a hands on activity so the kids should like that. This is a true gem of a place!

During a week-long stay in Xian, do not miss to visit this place far from the hustle and bustle of tourists who invade the more famous sites in Xian.
Guanzhong Folk Art Museum is the first non-government owned museum specializing in the preservation of folk art in China. It is located in Wutai Town, Chang’an District, Xian, at the north foot of South Wutai mountain which was a famous Buddhist shrine in the Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907) Dynasties and now a part of the Zhongnanshan National Forest Park. It is about 30 kilometers (19 mi) away from the city center of Xian. The buildings cover a building area of nearly 11 hectares (27 acres), while the total land area is treble that figure. Art Guangzhong Folk Art Museum houses some forty ancient residences of Ming and Qing styles moved and relocated here.
In this museum, visitors can also admire the intangible cultural heritage in a courtyard called Li Yuan (literally Pear Garden): a vigorous local opera which has been sung for over 1,000 years ago, as well as vivid shadow puppet plays. Li Yuan implies Chinese opera theaters. This is an allusion from the Tang Dynasty. Li Yuan was a place where opera performers were trained. The old theater in this courtyard is 130 year old.

This museum exhibits the Chinese style architecture buildings, such as theater, houses and temple. If you are interested in Chinese architecture, you will love this place. Entrance fee is 120 RMB. However, it quite far from the city.
