We actually went inside this museum and a teacher taught us how to write our name using Calligraphy - it was quite amusing, on finishing she announced that we can all have our name done by a master and it was for free. So we all lined up - as ours was not the best writing you would frame - but his was.

This is located within the city walls and provides several peaceful courtyards where one can relax. This museum holds numerous tables on which the history of China was written. It is interesting to see how the character syle varied over time towards the now traditional Yan style. There are also sections of stone carvings some with several hundred indiviidual Buddas carved.

Also on display was a demonstration on how depressed letters carved in the stone are filled.

Unfortunately I did not have sufficient time to explore the whole museum - needs at least an hour (we only had around 40 mins)

Just beautiful, and if you are a lover of Chinese calligraphy - do NOT miss this one! It shows some artist's progression during their career and some valuable input on how art and calligraphy joined. One of my highlights of Xian!

we went to the calligraphy museum as party of out tour, it was a great couple of hours and relaxing, the lady trying to teach us the basics was very patient and the whole group had a fun time, with varing levels of success, at the end you can buy a sample with your name on before you wander around the gardens, which are nice and cool.
W got to learn a bit of history as well as some more chinese language which was relpful during the rest of our tour.
All in all an entertaining couple of hours.

This is cool to go see if you have some spare time, or if you are interested in calligraphy. It is a good add on to a trip, but I would not say if you missed it you are going to be missing out too much.

I enjoyed it, am glad I went, and am glad it was on my itinerary but since I didn’t speak or read Chinese it may have been a bit lost on me.

Interesting range of traditional art types and our guide explained helpfully. Good to try the calligraphy workshop! Range of souvenirs turned out to be the best prices I saw in China.

Visited back in November 2013, here's one of the best landmarks for Chinese Calligraphy and finding out how to write with the paint brush! You can take calligraphy class here as a trial for 100+ yuan then there are also different exhibits of the calligraphy works of those renowned figures in history. Very good!

We were driven here with our Exoticca tour, straight from the bullet train we took from Beijing, so this was out first glimpse of XiAn. We came almost before the closing, so were rushed a little and our guide Sumana had to beg the security guide to let us take some photos by the Pagoda. We were bitten by mosquitos in the gardens.

We came here as part of our tour and had a calligraphy lesson. Very interesting. Afterwards you can have your name done on a scroll of your choice but you have to pay for it.
