In March of 2018 my family went to China and toured with China Highlights, whom I highly recommend! All 4 of our guides were amazing! Daxu was one of the places we visited while we were in Guilin (which, by the way, was our favorite...More
We arrived early in the morning before the crowds of tourists arrive and just as the locals were out doing their daily shopping, and setting up tables with food and craft items to sell. The narrow houses, shops & temple lined streets along the river...More
Easy to get to by private taxi from Guilin, Daxu is quite a dilapidated old town, and not as interesting or picturesque as other old towns in the Yellow Mountain region. There is basically one main street, with the houses on each side in poor...More
Most of the structures in Daxu Old Town are worn out and some of which are left vacant or deserted for a long time. A small portion of which had turned to selling commodities while a few of which are being renovated and touched up...More
Daxu Ancient Town used to be one of four major harbour towns back in its heyday. Nestled on the banks of the Li River, it was a strategically busy trade and market town. Today, it is a jewel of historical and cultural value.
Daxu is about a 30 minute didi/cab ride from Guilin. The old town consists mainly of a single cobblestone street lined with shops selling mostly standard tourist fare. There are a few interesting homes to visit, old stone gates, and it's nice just to walk...More

One more thing, I do think you can visit Daxu on your own. We walked down the main street and even walked into a residential area to see their vegetable gardens. Our guide did tell us to keep our belongings close to us and in our sight at all times. Having a guide made us feel safe as we wandered, though and gave us some good info about the history of the area. It’s a great place to see the architecture of the older times.

i am pretty sure that the Tombs site is not on a bus route so you will be stuck with going on an organised tour unless you cycle out there. It is not far, about 35 to 45 minutes from centre of Guilin in a vehicle, if you are cycling then the slow forever uphill would be a bit gruelling.
There are little old ramshackle buses to Daxu from SanLiDian junction and again it is less than an hour from there. It is a popular cycle trip for people younger and fitter than me.
