A city of character with a little authenticity (rather rare in what I have seen from China). It's worth a walk there. We also had the opportunity to visit an old gentleman who runs a kind of small local museum with lots of old traditional tools.

Experience he has of the mystic. This country seems to live in another era. It was great to walk through the local shops, which are shops only outside because inside there are their respective homes. And it was exciting to walk into the home of a local resident who opened the doors for us to see a house inside. It felt like the 1930s. Incredible

China Culture Tours/Cory introduced us to Mr Jun and we felt part of his family. We loved seeing Old China and understanding how they lived in the past and now.

In March of 2018 my family went to China and toured with China Highlights, whom I highly recommend! All 4 of our guides were amazing! Daxu was one of the places we visited while we were in Guilin (which, by the way, was our favorite city to visit). As we entered the Old Town, the architecture began to change. The alleys were still decorated with Chinese New Year lanterns and door signs. We loved the authenticity of the area. There were the normal vendors selling, but we walked down a side street with residences. My daughter loved seeing the babies. We asked one of the grandmothers if we could take a picture of my daughter with one of the toddlers and they declined. Our guide advised us we must ask first because of the superstitious belief that if you have your picture taken you would die. We continued to walk beyond the alleys and found a residential area which seemed to be built in a square with gardens covering the center of the residence. Many people live in this residential area and I suppose each residence has their own section of this garden. It was beautiful and wonderful. Kumquats abound here! All in all, it was just beautiful, quaint and historic. So much of China is being developed and the old architecture which defines China's history is disappearing. This was a lovely place to visit and I highly recommend it!

Hardly any tourists at the time of our visit, we found the old city to be quiet, relaxing and very much worth a stroll. Not everything is old, some houses are older than others, the vendors are not aggressive and you can relax just walking around, or just sitting somewhere, on the steps of a building, and watch the street and the locals going about their daily activities...

We visited this Old Town in 2000 and met a gentleman chemists (pharmacy) that had been in his family for many generations. The shop offered snake wine, fermented eggs, tiger bones?, and rhino horn? Before leaving the area, I got to visit with the old gentleman once again. He is now 94 years young!! He has clear eyes, no glasses, no limp, straight back, etc. I guess that his medicine is working for him and his family.

Our fantastic private guide Lilly Lu took us to Daxu old town and it has a mixture (all old) of rich merchant homes and shops and after you cross the old stone bridge you get to see the wooden homes that have locals living in them.

If you see a home in this part advertising that this is there family house and they have lived in it for over 130 years, do yourself a favour and pay the 10 rmb ($2 AUD) to go inside and have a look with the current owner, it is fantastic!

This is a step back in time and we didn't see many tourists here at all, maybe 20 people in about 60 minutes of walking the streets.

Well worth the visit, thanks Lilly Lu, that was great!

It was so interesting to walk the streets of the town and see people going about their daily lives. We had Passion flower jelly which was cold and refreshing, and a great lunch.

A couple of hours wandering Daxu takes you back to the pre-Revolution days for a glimpse of a lifestyle that's rapidly fading in modern China. Great to stroll through, and some residents will welcome you into their homes for a look at the way most Chinese used to live. Very enjoyable.
