The rebuilt southern gate of Guilin is right next to the city's picturesque waterway. The interior is quite rundown and unfortunately visitors cannot climb up the tower. Nothing particularly impressive.

While on the way back to my hotel from my hike at Diecai hill, I strayed into this Rong lake area. First I saw the Glass bridge where you need to pay RMB10 to walk along the bridge. Then, not far from the Glass bridge, I saw this Ancient South Gate.

The lakes around this Ancient South Gate were natural barriers against any attacks and the wall further reinforced this protective system. Most Gate or fortress walls were constructed with bricks.

Nothing spectacular about this South Gate. There are many similar fortress Gates in China but the fact that it was built during the Tang Dynasty prompted me to take a second look at the wall. Compared to the Namdaemum fortress gate in Seoul, this is too miniature a size to match.

It also lacks the intricate design of fortress walls like the Fort Cornwallis in Penang or the A Formasa in Melaka constructed by the British colonialists or the Fort Zeelandia built by the Dutch in Tainan, Anping Old Town.

Nevertheless, it gives me an impression of how a fortress gate wall looks like during the Tang Dynasty.

The Lake area around the gate is worthwhile to see during the day but at the night it is nicely lit for the cruises that go through. Very walkable and nice area near the gate but the gate itself is nothing special.

Well worth a visit when taking the scenic walk around the lake. There is an ancient banyan tree nearby and the whole area is beautifully lit at night.

Directly behind the gate is a restaurant called "You Fei Yu Ping You Cha Hui Suo". We were staying nearby at "This Old Place" Youth Hostel and ate here several times. Each time the food was really good, especially the vegetables. It's not expensive and kind of rustic - no tablecloths. It was often busy but not crowded or very noisy.

The "You Cha" in the name is "Ginger Tea", which is a "national cultural treasure". It comes in a soup bowl. Imagine that you;
1. Put some cereal like Rice Crispies into a bowl
2. Pour some ginger beer over it
3. Warm it up
...this is my approximation to You Cha. The real thing is actually tasty!

Our party included my Chinese-speaking wife. I don't think any staff at this place speak English but they are all helpful, and you could probably make you wishes clear with the aid of the illustrated menu. (If you travel independently to China with only English and a few mis-pronounced words of Mandarin, you will find everything difficult, everywhere.)

Situated within the Jiang river, it is just a standing tower. Nothing fanciful really. The park where it situated was worth a visit especially at night to enjoy it's surrounding scenery.

There is little left of the ancient gate and a modern building has been built on top. If you're wandering Riyue Cultural park, you will pass by the gate and almost miss it. Nice photo stop, but don't come just for the gate.

The ancient south gate was once part of a wall system and what we have now is only the gate and nothing else, It is in fact a rather small gate. They have patched up the place and it does look interesting but do not expect too much. The gate is located in a big park so if you are planning on visiting a big city park, this is a good place to go. There is plenty to see and a good place to relax and people watch. There are several bridges and lakes so it is a good to take some photos. If you are lucky, there might be some couples taking their wedding shoot there. Have fun.

Can see it while strolling near the area. Nothing very impressive. Okay for a quick stop if you are around this area.

It looks more striking at night than in day time. It does not have anything special, except for being historic. Most sights around it are nice and it is a very pleasant stroll around the lake with all the bridge, so you should see it without particular effort.
