Guangzhou has one of the best, most efficient subway systems in the world. It is so easy to use the system, especially if you have a Metro card. For the non-frequent rider, the most challenging part is to select the exit which will get you to your destination in the least amount of time.

During our trip to Guangzhou, riding on the metro is our main mode of transportation (besides walking). We bought the 3-day pass (72 hours usage from the time you first use it) for 50rmb per person and used it throughout.

The cost of each metro ride was quite cheap (RMB2-8 on average depending on distance/stations travelled). Well, must say the train rides were pretty cool and comfortable (except during peak hours when the trains were packed and commuters were rushing their way and they also didn't give way to outgoing passengers or give up their seats to those who needed).

They made several announcements before arriving each station in 3 main languages, Mandarin, English and Cantonese and also came with traditional music. That's interesting!

Trains were also on time too. And also the train stations were generally clean and bright.

But what was troubling (or rather a little inconvenience or have they overdone it) was that whenever you enter a metro station gantry, you will need to first go through a "security check", similar to those at the airport (but the staff were more lazed off). You will need to put your bags/carryings through the X-ray machine and you walk through a metal detector device. While safety and security were important, imagine you were doing it everytime you enter a station, could be very troublesome and time-consuming especially during peak hours.

And we spotted at some stations, the so called security guards who supposedly to be watching on the camera from the X-ray machine, dozed off or playing with their phones instead!

Overall, we enjoyed the rides but if they can minimize or reduce the security checking for every station, it would be perfect.

While traffic congestion is a chronic and continuously worsening issue in Guangzhou, taking the subway is best way of getting around. With vast network and cheap pricing, Guangzhou Metro is a top world-standard option to explore the city. Everything is English too.

This is a great subway system. Most areas of Guangzhou are readily accessible. The trains are clean and seemingly always on time. Affordable and convenient. I ride it at least a few times a week.

The main problem I've had is the way some Chinese act when things get crowded. I recently got shoved out of the way by an older Chinese woman running to the train and a younger woman stepped on my foot bruising my toe. People are also often bad about standing in line sometimes. Lots of cutting. Way too much pushing and shoving. Why do people act like this? What can you do about it.

I live in Shenzhen and travel often, so it is common to use the local metros. Guangzhou metro was fairly simple to use and get around. It is similar to Shenzhen, so understanding how the system work wasn't that difficult. I was able to get near or exactly to everything I wanted to. Another nice thing is that the metro isn't really expensive to use and quite affordable, especially when compared to taxis.

No social distancing on the Guangzhou subway. Everyone is wearing a mask. little fear of being infected. Guangzhou infection rate has been low to zero. A great way to get around town.

I travel from the airport to the city and then multiple times within the city. It is a super inexpensive and fast way to travel. Made easier with the free MetroMan app to give you alternate routes, times and fees, and a Metro card to save time.
