Shopping for a Buddha Necklace
Jul 2020
SWMBO showed me the small jade Buddha on her necklace and pointed at a small ding the result of dropping it on the floor. She’d looked on the Internet for a replacement but without success, so a visit to the jade market was called for. I reckoned she meant the area around JinLun Hall (TA reviewed) which abounded with small and not so small shops selling jade. My hunch proved correct and mid-afternoon saw us getting the No. 181 bus from around the corner, rather than the metro we used for the visit to JinLun Hall. After a 30 minutes bus ride we got off the bus at the HuaLin Si bus stop and walked about 100 metres further on and suddenly we were in the huge mall building. Actually, the stall and shops in the mall sells every kind of jewelry and ornaments you can imagine and doesn’t restrict itself to jade. Lots of gold and silver, and a few stalls specializing in ivory. There’s everything from the cheap and cheerful bracelets and necklaces for kids, to the expensive and don’t touch rings and ornaments for millionaires. SWMBO soon found a stall which had a buddhas by the hundred in her price range, so while she perused the jade I strolled around the mall. I must admit I’m not an aficionado of ornaments or jewelry, so it was a bit of a relief not to be constantly hassled to buy which is the norm in any place retail. Maybe I just look poor? Anyway the place is huge. After what seemed eternity, SWMBO announced she’d completed the purchase of not one but three Buddha necklaces. To make the Buddhas happy, SWMBO announced they’d have to be taken to the nearby HuaLin Temple (TA Reviewed) which is just across the road. We crossed the road and found ourselves after a couple of minutes walking in HuaLin Jade Street (TA reviewed).
