Most moving monument in Mamayev
Apr 2021
Apart many dignified and glorious monuments all over the Mamayev Kurgan complex, this one is very sad and moving.
Right beneath the Motherland Calling statue a mother mourns over her lost son in the battle. A small path over the pond leads right to the monument.

Russian Pieta.
Jul 2020
This monument to Eugene Vuchetich could be called the Russian Pieta by analogy with the famous sculpture of Michelangelo in the Cathedral of San Pietro. The real prototype of the Russian Pieta could be Epistinia Fyodorovna Stepanova. All 9 sons of Epistinia Stepanova fought on the fronts of the Civil War, the Battle of Khalkhin Gol and the Second World War. Only one returned from the war disabled and subsequently died of wounds. The other 8 sons died while performing their military duty. Two sons Ilya and Alexander (junior) they participated in the Battle of Stalingrad and survived, but died the following year at the Kursk Bulge and the crossing of the Dnieper. Alexander received the highest military award of the country, becoming a posthumous hero of the Soviet Union.

Good Monument

A fitting monument to the other people affected by the war. There is a lovely view down to the river and you can see all the statues from here.

Square of grief
Sep 2018 • Business
Millions didn't return home. Greatest grief for mothers, wives, daughters - only women can feel it properly for ages. The face of the son is covered by banner and I want you to guess why. On this square we can find one grave of absolutely unbelievable fighter who deceived death and saved Soviet Union and maybe the whole world. He has the best grave place in the whole Stalingrad/Volgograd and maybe whole Russia with direct sight of the Volga. He deserves it!!! HE DESERVES IT !!!

Very good monument, I liked seeing it and taking some shots.
As I will always say, the good thing about all this monuments is that it is all gathered in one place in the Mamayev Kurgan Hill.

every mothers nightmare
Jun 2018 • Friends
part of a place of unbelievable suffering and sadness this statue stands out in its simplicity. It shows grief in such a direct way - a mother cradling her dead sons body - on the left of the walk way to the main "Motherland Calls" statue.

Statues with a story
Sep 2015 • Couples
These statues tell a story by themselves. They tell a lot about the heart and the mentality of the Russian people. It add a lot to this already impressive place

The entire area is an excellent representation of the patriotism, bravery and grief of war. This is probably the most difficult statue to photograph because people are posing in front of it.
