The statue is located Not far from the main tower of the local Kremlin (meaning "castle" in Russian).
It was quite cold and windy when j was there but the views offered from the "observation platform nearby is panoramic and surely the BEST in the city.
There were mobile "cafés" for people who needed hot drinks to keep warm.

Standing high on a hill, this monument makes for a great photo, especially with blue sky in the background.

This is a very nice and historic monument, beside the big challenge this pilot did manage, it also reminds about the better times when Russia and USA/Canada were still friends.

He was a true daredevil. Live fast die young. He had a breathtaking carrier a test pilot. Started as hooligan who flies under the bridges he was selected to be a leading man in team who flew around Soviet Russia, then he was the capitan of the crew who wasn't scared to fly over the north pole from Moscow to Canada.
He was beloved hero. he died at 34 doing the test flights for new planes.
Town in Nizhny Novgorod region is called after him.
Monument shows him as man with tong in the cheek. Just step down 3 stair down from it and you will see it.
He is the pilot in Russia as Gagarins is the cosmonaut.

I'd never heard his name until I visited Nizhny Novgorod. He was a Soviet test pilot who was later honoured as a hero of the Soviet Union

Chkalov was a test pilot, later officially designated a hero of the Soviet Union. I wish I knew more about him.

The monument that tops the giant staircase facing the Volga was supposed to be that of Maxim Gorky initially, and then Gorky was placed in Gorky square and another one sitting Gorky nearby Azimut hotel, Feodorovsky embankment and here is Valery Chkalov, the star of aerobatics and a famous test pilot known to have crossed the North Pole in a team of 3 pax , 1937 non-stop from Moscow to Vancouver , US . to shake hands with president Frqnklin Roosevelt.. that`s an excellent view, any season, so don`t miss a picture from the top of the staircase. To learn more on Chkalov you may wish to visit his former country home in a small town of Chkalovsk, TIP: it still hosts a few of the man`s aircrafts

The momument itself is not so impressive. Go some steps further for a nice view over the rivers. See the Kremlin wall and the new stadium.

I liked this place most. You have wide view of greenery over the river. A place you just seat there and can spend hours. Nice walk-way. lots of activity. If you are energetic just go down through stair and reach the river bank.

Impressive statue of flight pioneer who flew over the North Pole in the 1930s.
Near to the wall of the Nizhniy Novgorod Kremlin.
From the place of the statue one can enjoy a marvelous panorama view of new city with the new stadium 🏟 over both Oka and Volga.
