There are several embankments on the Neva. One in the former British Embassy is called the British Embankment, the University embankment by the Egyptian statues, called the Admiralty Embankment by the Admiralty building, the Kutuzov by the Kutusov palace by the Neva, the Petrovskaya by the cabin of Peter the Great, the one by the Hermitage is called the Palace Embankment. My favorite was the palace embankment, overlooking the Roman columns of the Vasileostrovsky / Petrogradsky district and the old palace. Walking along the embankments of the Neva one can admire a myriad of palaces and important buildings and parks.

St Petersburg is the former capital and has the moniker "Venice of the North". There is no better way to see the city, day or night, than by boat on the canals.

Take a walk along this great river to view the city sights, the fantastic architecture and to appreciate the history. It's essential though even in mid-September the weather was cold and windy so wrap up!

There are several places along the Neva river that you can stop to take in the amazing sights. Some great photo opportunities.

Taking a walk along the Neva Embankments gives great views of different attractions on both sides of the river. Departure points along the way for river cruises and the hydrofoil to Peterhof. We had an early flight home so managed to see the raising of the bridges. If out walking at night don't get caught out by this as it's a long detour to get from one side of the river to the other.
